Thursday Royal Fire Update: 215 acres burned with 30 percent containment

CURRENT SITUATION
The Royal Fire continues to hold within its footprint. Yesterday, crews were successful with constructing a combination of hand and dozer line all the way around the fire. The incident continues to be supported by aviation resources. Today, crews will continue to improve handline and begin cold trailing (feeling for hotspots) where appropriate. Resources are beginning to plan suppression repair needs. Hot and dry conditions continue over the fire area through Friday. Gusty west-southwesterly winds, 15-25 mph, are expected in the afternoon. Fire behavior is moderate with minimal smoke output.

There are approximately 361 individual personnel assigned to the Royal Fire. Firefighting resources include 5 Type 1 helicopters including 1 of which is night-capable water-droppers, 1 Type 2 helicopter, 1 air attack, 1 Type 1 24-hour hoist-capable rescue helicopter, 11 crews, 6 engines, 5 dozers, 4 water tenders and 1 excavator.

CLOSURES
• Tahoe National Forest has issued a fire area closure order.
• The Royal Fire Closure Area boundary begins at the intersection of Serene Road and Soda Springs Road (County Road 6001). The boundary follows the Soda Springs Road south and then west and south to the junction of Mosquito Ridge Road (Forest Road 96). The boundary then continues northwest for approximately 5 miles until it reaches the western terminus of the Long Valley Trail (Forest Trail 14E29). The boundary then travels along the Long Valley Trail east to the intersection of Long Valley and Palisades Creek Trail (Forest Trail 14E14) and then continues north along the Palisades Creek Trail to the intersection with Kidd Lakes Road (County Road 9146). The boundary then travels southeast from the Palisades Creek Trailhead for approximately 3 miles back to the starting point at Serene Road and Soda Springs Road.

EVACUATIONS
• Placer County Sheriff’s Office has not issued any additional evacuation orders or warnings.
• An evacuation warning remains for the community of the Cedars.

Tahoe Alerts is a one-stop resource for the various emergency alert systems available in different regions around Lake Tahoe, encompassing Placer, El Dorado, Nevada, Douglas, Alpine, and Washoe counties, as well as Truckee, Carson City and South Lake Tahoe.

INCIDENT HISTORY
The Royal Fire was reported July 7, 2024 at 4:09 p.m. in the area of Royal Gorge on the North Fork of the American River on the Tahoe National Forest. The fire is located in steep, rugged terrain that is difficult to access. Tahoe National Forest immediately responded to the incident with aggressive aerial resources. Ground crews continue to reinforce incident objectives to suppress and contain the fire as quickly as possible.

The Tahoe National Forest is in unified command with Placer County Sheriff’s Office, CALFIRE/Placer County Fire and Placer County Office of Emergency Services on the Royal Fire incident.

Since April 15, 2024 the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating the disappearance of 25-year-old Sara Fliliatraut. The investigation led to the discovery of Ms. Filiatraut’s remains in a remote area of Churchill County on May 22, 2024. An autopsy performed by the Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Ms. Filiatraut’s death as a homicide.

The annual Genoa Lakes Ladies’ Golf Club President’s Cup tournament took place July 16 and July 18 at the Genoa Lakes Golf Club Ranch and Lakes Courses. Thirty members competed in the two-day, net tournament. Terri Ianiro was the winner, with a net score of 133. Kory Miller was the runner-up, with a score of 134.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Army National Guard joined the fight to halt the progression of western wildfires in California on Monday.

There have been several rumors and public requests over the years to fill the old K-Mart building. Recently, calls for a Winco, Whole Foods, a second Target, an indoor go-cart track, and even a homeless shelter have been brought up. However, since the store shuttered in 2006, there’s been little to no movement on rebranding it.

UPDATE: A 20-year-old Kentucky man, Owen Joseph McDonough, was positively identified as the drowning victim rescued from rough waters at Whale Beach located along the east shore of Lake Tahoe.

The family of the Villa Hills victim have been notified by the Carson City Sheriff's Office Coroner’s Division. McDonough was described by the family as an intermediate skilled swimmer.
