Drift smoke from California wildfires moves into western Nevada, Carson City region

Drift smoke from California wildfires has wafted into Carson City and Western Nevada this Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
After sunrise it was evident that smoke from wildfires in California had drifted across portions of the Sierra and into western Nevada.
“It is a west flow loft that is happening and we are trying to determine where it is coming from and where it will eventually go,” said Evan LaGuardia, a NWS meteorologist in Reno.
With westerly wind flows, forecasters are uncertain at this time whether more smoke will move into the region or blow out as the winds pick up in the afternoon.
Carson City Fire Department Chief Sean Slamon said he noticed the smoke to the southwest Tuesday morning while he was out walking.
"It is the drift smoke moving in from the California fires," he said. "It is noticeable in south Carson City and into Douglas."
Much of the smoke is believed to be coming from the County Fire burning in Yolo and Napa counties in northern California. As of Tuesday morning, that fire has burned 70,000 acres and is 5 percent contained, according to CalFire. Smoke may also be coming from the Lions Fire, which is burning southwest of Mammoth Lakes.
The fire is currently 3,850 acres and 50 percent contained as of Tuesday morning.
For Carson City, the air quality is expected to be in the “Moderate” range today, according to AirNow.gov.
This means air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.
Dry conditions with temperatures cooling to near normal can be expected for much of the week, with hotter temperatures returning for the weekend, according to the weather service. Typical breezes can be expected with gusts 20 to 30 mph each afternoon and evening through the week.
