NHP: Carson City woman faces DUI, other charges in fatal crash near Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe
A 52-year-old woman visiting from Thailand has been identified as the person who died Monday in a crash on Highway 50 near Cave Rock at Lake Tahoe. The incident is being investigated as DUI related with a Carson City driver suspected in causing the crash, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Sranthon Bunnag, a front seat passenger in a black Chrysler minivan occupied by five others, died from injuries sustained in the head-on crash involving a black 2015 VW Passat occupied by the Carson City woman, said NHP Trooper Dan Gordon.
According to the preliminary crash investigation, the VW Passat was traveling eastbound around a curve and crossed over the double yellow lines and into westbound traffic striking the minivan head on as it was traveling westbound around the same curve.
The driver of the black VW Passat, the sole occupant, was transported to a Reno hospital by ambulance with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. The 40-year-old female of Carson City is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, said Trooper Gordon. When she is released from the hospital, she will be booked into the Douglas County jail for DUI and other related charges, he added.
The driver of the Chrysler minivan and the 4 other passengers were all transported to a South Lake Tahoe hospital via ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.
