Carson City Airport Fly In Open House soars with excitement, career opportunities
The Carson City Airport was ready for take-off Saturday, celebrating its 90th anniversary and annual Fly In Open House event.
The family-friendly event draws thousands of spectators, where airplane enthusiasts of all kinds gather to feast their eyes on aviation history, or learn about specific career fields.
The economic impact of the airport to the local community raises an estimated $30 million annually.
“This event plants a seed that could potentially spark the next generation of engineers or other careers of that sort,” Rick Clemmens, owner of the Cactus Air Force Wings and Wheels Museum said. “It’s really nice to see the people who take interest in this kind of stuff, it sure makes my day.”
Along with the various makes and models of airplanes and helicopters, this year’s event focused on promoting education and experience toward aviation-related careers. Attendees also received hands-on training from pilots and volunteers.
“Getting an opportunity to see these pieces of aircraft up close is really important,” pilot Doug Russell said. “It’s great for kids because they may not get the chance to learn and build these kinds of connections but we are here to teach them.”
“Whether it’s a career or a hobby, we want to show how important aviation is,” Airport Manager Ken Moen added. “Careers in these field have a big impact, and we want them to see that.”
Several organizations offered informative programming and various activities throughout the fun-filled event.
Located at 2600 College Parkway, Carson City Airport Fly In Open House runs until 4 p.m. Saturday. Parking can be found on site at the airport. A boy scout troop will also guide motorists through parking.
