Election Day underway in Carson City
Today is election day in Carson City and throughout the state of Nevada, and due to COVID-19, things are happening a little differently this year.
For example, ballots were mailed in March to every registered voter throughout the Silver State to lessen the need for voters to turn up in person to cast their ballots.
However, in person voting is still being allowed of course, with at least one voting location per county.
In Carson City, in person voting is taking place today at the Carson City Courthouse, located at 885 E. Musser Street.
As of June 5, 9,617 of the 35,000 mailed ballots had been returned and accepted, and 4,100 ballots had been rejected, most due to ballots being returned as "undeliverable."
Many voters who turned up at the courthouse this morning were surprised, and in many cases, frustrated, to find that voting machines are not being used during this election cycle.
Instead, those who come to vote in person are being given an identical ballot to those that were sent in the mail.
Many of those who came to vote in person today had received their mail in ballots, according to the voters, but decided not to use them as an act of protest against the mail-in voting system. They became frustrated when they learned that they were being issued identical ballots to the ones they had left at home.
Those who chose to vote in person signed a document which stated that their old, mailed ballot would not be counted if it was mailed in or dropped off, and that the new ballot would be the only one counted by the clerk's office.
Paper ballots were then sealed in their envelopes and dropped in the ballot box in front of the election department front desk, from which they will be counted along with the mail in ballots.
Surfaces are cleaned by a volunteer after each voter turns in their ballot.
The Carson City Courthouse will be open today from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for in person voting.
