Lyon County fire crews respond to brush fire north of Silver Springs

UPDATE 4:43PM: The Piper Fire that started Friday afternoon 3 miles north of Silver Springs Piper Ranch along Highway 50A/95 is now roughly 200 acres, according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch. Helicopter support and crews are battling the blaze. KOLO reports 8 structures are threatened. Central Lyon Fire is being assisted by Carson City and Storey County, Nevada Division of Forestry and Bureau of Land Management.

Lyon County fire crews were called shortly after 2 p.m. Friday to a report of a brush fire that was burning in the hills north of Silver Springs off of Alternate Route U.S. 50 toward Fernley.
Calls to Lyon County 911 informed dispatch the fire was putting up smoke and had burned around 2 acres between Fernley and Silver Springs, an area known as Damon's Curve near Piper Ranch.
Central Lyon County Fire Protection District and fire departments north of Silver Springs were responding.
It is unknown at this time if homes or structures are threatened. The region is experiencing breezy conditions with a Wind Advisory and Red Flag Warning to begin early Saturday.
People are advised to stay clear of the area to allow for fire engines.
The fire comes two days after the Chaves Fire east of Dayton was fully contained. The fire was started Sunday by target shooters and burned more than 3,400 acres.
