V&T Railway Toast of the Canyon train tours return; will feature local and regional wineries, distilleries and breweries
CARSON CITY — Returning for the 2019 season, the V&T Railway’s popular Toast of the Canyon train rides kicks off on Saturday, June 15 and will feature area wineries, distilleries and breweries. The event, which runs every other Saturday through October, takes passengers into the Carson River Canyon to enjoy libations and appetizers.
“Our Toast of the Canyon trains provide passengers a unique opportunity to experience a piece of Nevada history while enjoying some of the area’s best libations,” said Elaine Barkdull-Spencer, general manager for V&T Railway. “This year, we wanted to expand past wine and incorporate the amazing beers and spirits produced in our area to feature local breweries and distilleries in addition to popular regional wineries and appetizers from local restaurants.”
The 45-minute, two-and-a-half mile train ride will take passengers past several historic and scenic locations in the Carson River Canyon. On the return trip, passengers will have an opportunity to take pictures of the ‘Iron Horse’ as it reattaches itself to the cars for the journey back and hear the echo of the whistle as it bounces off the canyon walls.
Trains depart Carson City’s Eastgate Depot at 5 p.m. and will embark on a 45-minute journey with libations and appetizers for guests 21 and up.
Tickets can be purchased online for $35 at www.vtrailway.com or (877) 724-5007. The Carson City passenger station is located approximately seven miles east of Carson City at 4650 Eastgate Siding Road.

About V&T Railway
Established in 1870, the V&T Railroad was completed between Carson City and Virginia city as Nevada’s first short-line railroad. Two years later, the track was extended to Reno to connect with the transcontinental Central Pacific Railroad. After 80 years of operation, the train ceased operations in 1950 but was reconstructed by the Gray family and reopened in the late 1980’s.
Continuing to work on the line, the Gray’s reopened the line between Virginia City and Gold Hill in 1991 and in 1993, the state set up a commission to rebuild the line, known as the Nevada Commission for the Reconstruction of the V&T Railway. The train continues to operate yearly and features several special events including the wildly-popular Polar Express. For more information, please visit www.vtrailway.com.
