Carson City weekend weather: Heat lingers Friday then cooler and windy with showers possible
Near record high temperatures will continue through Friday with afternoon thunderstorms possible, especially around the Reno and Lake Tahoe areas, according to the National Weather Service.
Strong gusty winds are forecast for Saturday with rain showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly from the Tahoe area north. Even with rain showers and cooler temperatures moving into the northern Sierra, lower valleys in the eastern Sierra and western Nevada could see enhanced fire danger Saturday ahead of the cold front due to gusty winds, forecasters say.
Saturday though will also bring a substantial cool down, with high temperatures 20 degrees cooler for most areas from what we've been experiencing this week.
For Friday though it will be another hot and dry day with temperatures into the upper 80s and low 90s across western Nevada and in the 80s for the Sierra. Temperatures will continue to be 15-20 degrees above normal, but thunderstorm chances increase for the afternoon through the evening, forecasters say.
The chance for thunderstorms will build over the Sierra from the Tahoe Basin south into Mono County. As the afternoon progresses, coverage looks to extend into northeast California with slight chances for storms along the Sierra Front possible, including Carson City, Carson Valley, Reno and Sparks areas. Typical impacts such as strong out flow gusts, brief downpours, small hail, and lightning are anticipated with any storms.
Daytime highs Friday for the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas will be in the low 90s. For the Lake Tahoe Basin, temperatures are expected to be near 80.
Thunderstorm chances look to continue into Saturday morning with wetting rains, around a 10th of an inch, for the Tahoe Basin into northeast California probable. Rain showers are likely for western Nevada, but mainly confined to areas west of US-95 and NV-447 near Pyramid Lake.
Besides the thunderstorms and precipitation, southwest winds for Saturday afternoon and evening will most likely be moderately strong region-wide with gusts reaching in the 35-45 mph range thanks to the passing low towards the west.
Stronger winds are anticipated along the Sierra ridges and across Mineral, Churchill, and Pershing counties where blowing dust is possible. Conditions on area lakes, including Tahoe and Pyramid, will also be rough during this time.
Daytime highs for Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas will be around 70 on Saturday, significantly cooler. High temperatures for the Lake Tahoe basin will be in the mid to upper 50s.
The unsettled weather is expected to continue into Sunday, leaving the area on the cool side with a slight chance for showers and thunderstorms. Daytime highs Sunday around the Carson City region will be in the mid-70s, with night time lows in the mid-40s. For Tahoe, Sunday's highs will be in the lower 60s.
