Carson City sheriff's arrest log: Woman jailed for shoplifting more than $700 worth of items

A 20-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Friday afternoon at 1:54 p.m. at a business in the 3200 block of Market Street for suspicion of felony grand larceny and misdemeanor minor in possession of alcohol, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

According to the arrest report, a deputy was dispatched to a business following a report of a female suspect who had been detained by store security, which confronted her near the exit.

The suspect, Cora Williams, had passed all points of sale, store security reported, with a shopping cart full of items that had no receipt. Williams admitted to taking the items because she didn't have the money after paying rent, the arrest report states.

Among the items in the cart were several liquor bottles and beer, the report said, with a total retail value of nearly $775.

A records check through dispatch showed a pair of confirmed failure to appear bench warrants: One out of Carson City Justice Court and the other of the East Fork Justice Court in Douglas County. Bail: $25,000.

In other arrests:
— A pair of male transients were arrested Friday night at 8:49 p.m. in the 1400 block of College Parkway for suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

According to the arrest report, 32-year-old Clifford Gazarek and 33-year-old Stephen Skipworth were taken into custody after the deputy had observed under the influence behavior by Gazarek from inside of a business.

The deputy reported that both subjects had made prolonged eye contact with him as he pulled into the parking lot of the business. Gazarek then exited the vehicle and entered the business at the same time as the deputy, who observed the suspect as lethargic with fading eyes and rigid body tone.

The deputy followed the suspect's vehicle as it left the business. The vehicle returned to the same parking lot it had left moments earlier, the report said, and the deputy performed a records check on the license plates, which belonged to a Jeep SUV and not the Ford SUV they were on.

The suspect vehicle stopped to inflate a fully inflated tire, the deputy reported, and a traffic stop was made at that point. Skipworth, seated on the passenger side, was making suspicious movements from inside the vehicle, the report said.

Another Sheriff's deputy had arrived in support, while a K9 officer performed an exterior sniff of the suspect vehicle. Positive alerts from the K9 were made, including directly to a backpack visible from the SUV's open tailgate.

The K9 proceeded to sniff the vehicle's interior and gave alerts at the passenger side door.

Gazarek denied there were any drugs in the vehicle, but he did admit to using methamphetamines in the past week.

A vehicle search was then performed and several pieces of foil with black track marks were found, the report said, along with a tooter straw in the passenger door map pocket. Those items were consistent with heroin use, the deputy reported.

Foil with black track marks were located inside the backpack as well, the report said.

Underneath a tampered with center console, deputies also located a tobacco can on the transmission hump. Inside of that were multi-colored balloons containing 10 points of heroin substance, the report said.

The substance was field tested and came back presumptive positive for heroin.

Gazarek and Skipworth were handcuffed at that point and transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $2,500 each.

— A 20 year-old Elko man was arrested early Saturday morning at 4:01 a.m. in the area of South Carson and Sonoma streets on a misdemeanor failure to appear traffic warrant issued out of Elko Township, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

According to the report, a traffic stop was made on a vehicle traveling at 13 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. Records checks were performed on all five occupants of the vehicle, including the front passenger, whose record returned with a confirmed bench warrant from Elko County.

The subject was handcuffed and transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $395.

— A 25 year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday morning at 10:28 a.m. in the 1500 block of Rand Avenue for a misdemeanor bench warrant issued out of Reno Township, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

According to the report, the deputy conducted a traffic stop on the suspect's vehicle, which had no working brake lights. Upon making contact with the driver, a records check through dispatch confirmed the warrant for misdemeanor possession of one ounce or less of marijuana.

The subject was handcuffed and transported to the Carson City Jail for booking. Bail: $500.

— A 26 year-old Fallon man was arrested Friday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. at the Carson City Jail on misdemeanor probation violation and an outstanding misdemeanor domestic battery warrant, a Carson City Sheriff's deputy said.

According to the report, a Churchill County Sheriff's deputy arrived at the jail with the subject, who had been picked up for two outstanding arrest warrants: One issued out of the Carson City Justice Court for a probation violation, and another out of Union Township in Humboldt County for first offense domestic battery.

Dispatch confirmed the warrants and was booked into the Carson City Jail. The subject was credited with time served in Churchill County detention, the report said. Bail: $3,000.

All information for the crime log (unless otherwise noted) comes from the arrest reports supplied by the Carson City Sheriff's Office, and is considered by law to be public information. All subjects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The policy of Carson Now is to name anyone who is arrested for a felony offense.
