Nevada’s first cybersecurity apprenticeship program approved
CARSON CITY — Members of the State Apprenticeship Council approved Tuesday the first cybersecurity program in the state. Several occupations across multiple in-demand sectors such as information technology and advanced manufacturing were also approved, including the first occupation in hospitality with MGM Resorts International.
Faced with a growing shortage of skilled workers, these apprenticeship opportunities will empower Nevada’s employers to cultivate future talent and assist individuals seeking career and economic mobility.
The Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation, also known as OWINN, has successfully scaled and expanded registered apprenticeships over the past year as an innovative strategy to reduce the state’s skills gap.
“The addition of this new apprenticeship program and these new occupations in high-demand industries add further momentum in the ongoing efforts to develop and retain a diverse and skilled workforce in Nevada that is consistent with Governor Sandoval’s bold workforce vision” said Manny Lamarre, Executive Director of OWINN. “We will continue to engage employers and the broader community in the value of Registered Apprenticeship to resolve their workforce needs,” he added.
“I want to thank the State Apprenticeship Council for their hard work in vetting and for approving these high-quality programs that will provide Nevadans opportunities to earn-and-learn in high-growth, high-demand industries,” said Erin Hasty, State Apprenticeship Director of OWINN.
The State Apprenticeship Council approved the following apprenticeship program:
The Learning Center
The Learning Center, Inc. is a Las Vegas based education company that provides training, certification and team skills development in the IT and Cybersecurity areas. With the State Apprenticeship Council’s approval, The Learning Center will serve as a program sponsor across the following occupations: Computer Support Specialist and Cybersecurity Support Technician.
“The establishment of this innovative Cybersecurity Apprenticeship program supports workforce development and economic diversification of Nevada,” said Linda Montgomery, President of The Learning Center. “This program will support family-sustaining careers in this field and will serve our employer base in filling the 3000+ open cybersecurity jobs in our state.”
New Occupations with MGM Resorts International, C.C. Welding, and H & T Nevada, LLC
The State Apprenticeship Council also approved new apprentice occupations for Truckee Meadows Community College and Workforce Connections’ existing apprenticeship program, previously approved at the last State Apprenticeship Council meeting in February. These new occupations in the hospitality and advanced manufacturing sectors include Buyer-Purchasing with MGM Resorts International, Metal Fabricator with C.C. Welding, and Electro-Mechanical Technician with H & T Nevada, LLC.
“Nevada’s Apprenticeship Project at Truckee Meadows Community College is excited to expand apprenticeship opportunities to advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and now hospitality occupations,” said Cheryl Olson, Project Director.
