Lyon County braces for flooding potential as temperatures warm up
Lyon County Manager Jeff Page announced Wednesday the National Weather Service in Reno is predicting an increase flow for both the Walker and Carson Rivers next week.
The Carson River is expected to peak to around 5000 plus cubic feet per second on May 25, 2017 and the Walker River is expected to peak to around 3500 CFS, with a lower than average confidence in peak flow, on the same date.
The Carson River ran around 5000 CFS on May 8, 2017 at the Fort Churchill Gauge. The Walker River peaked at almost 2100 CFS on May 16th, 2017 at the gauge near Mason.
Page is suggesting that citizens and businesses near the Walker River take the following preparedness activities:
— Secure propane tanks and anything that could float away
— Develop a plan and be prepared to evacuate. Ensure that you pack medications, pet food and supplies, important documents
— Develop a Communications Plan with family and friends in the event you are separated.
— Ensure vehicles are fueled
