Carson High School announces 2021 prom and friendship court

Congratulations to Kassandra Medina-Torres and Izayah Pando, Carson High Schools’s 2021 Prom Queen and King. And congrats to Giselle Rodiles Saldana and William Escalante, CHS’s Friendship Queen and King.

Prom Queen Candidates included Brayer Fancher, Cady Garrett, Rosalind Macy, Kassandra Medina-Torres, Ashley Pacheco and Lilly Roman. Prom King Candidates included Cash Farnworth, Kalin Gordon, Jeremy Heaton, Kobe Morgan, Izayah Pando and Michael Roman. Friendship Queen Candidates also included Kaitlyn Grime and Mikayla Portch.

Park Rangers from Carson City will be set up under the pavilion at Carson River Park from 3:00pm - 5:00pm on August 19, 2023, welcoming families to the third annual Junior Park Ranger Day! Kids (and adults if desired) of all ages will receive a FREE JR Ranger Adventure Guide.

On Thursday August 10 at 6:30PM, the Douglas County Historical Society continues its History Lecture Series with a 55-minute slide show presentation, “The Big Bang.” Local author/historian, takes a look back at the incredible, true and bizarre story of a calculating and disgruntled gambler, and his attempt to extort three million dollars from the historic Harvey’s Casino Resort at Lake Tahoe in August of 1980.

HCC's August public meeting includes two guest speakers

Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties meets Thursday, August 10 at 9am, via Zoom (connection details below). The HCC public meeting includes coalition and group partner updates and introductions, discussion of matters of regional importance to health and wellness, plus presentations by guest speakers.

The Eldorado Forest Interpretative Association offers free guided interpretative hikes in and around the Carson Pass area throughout August and September.

These hikes vary from 45 minutes long like our historical Devil's Ladder hike to three hours long like our water color painting hikes.

Halloween Weekend on the Haunted Comstock

Halloween Weekend Northern Nevada Ghost Hunters presents their 2023 Haunted Hills, Mills, & Depots. The event will take place Friday night, Oct. 27 at 6 pm at the historic Gold Hill Depot where participants will have the opportunity to spend time getting to know NNGH and our special guests: Haunted Pursuit, The N.E.R.D.S. , Father David Deerfeeder, Harvey Althaus, and The Thin Veil investigators featuring Nevada author Sandie LaNae.

CARSON CITY - Brief overnight ramp and shoulder closures will take place on Interstate 580 in Carson City through August as the Nevada Department of Transportation installs and activates new wrong-way driver detection systems.

The next Carson City School District School Board meeting will take place Tuesday Aug. 8 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Robert ‘Bob’ Crowell Board Room within the Carson City Community Center.

The Nevada Humane Society is hosting a puppy adoption today, Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Carson City Toyota. The six, two month old puppies are available to be adopted today at this furry little event.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Wildlife biologists for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) this morning safely immobilized a large female conflict bear responsible for at least 21 DNA-confirmed home break-ins and extensive property damage in the South Lake Tahoe area since 2022. Her three cubs were also captured in the effort.

The Gold Hill Hotel, as seen on Ghost Adventures and proclaimed as the 8th most haunted location in Nevada, is now offering Historical Ghost Tours on Aug. 10.

On August 3 rd , 2023 around 6:25 pm, a light-colored four door hatchback was leaving the drive through of Starbucks near the intersection of State Street at E. Williams Street in Carson City, Nevada.

The light-colored hatchback turned left from the drive through and ran into the back-trunk area of a black and red Dodge Charger parked in front of Pizzava.

On Thursday, August 3, 2023, the Lyon County Board of County Commissioners voted to continue an agenda item discussing a resolution requesting the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to reduce the speed limit from 60 to 45 miles per hour on Highway 50 in Dayton from Fortune Drive to La Fond Avenue.

A 33-year-old Carson City man was arrested on several felony charges after attempting to escape from deputies.

According to the arrest report, Duffy Thomas was arrested in the area of E. Park St. and N. Roop St. by Special Enforcement Team deputies attempting to arrest another individual on a warrant when they spotted a family member of Thomas’s.

Hello fellow anglers. This report is usually one I do in April or May of each year. Campgrounds and lakes are finally opening in the eastern sierras, and the fish plants have begun.

Also note in this report that there are still some areas that have not opened up due to snow and muddy terrain.

The Carson City Sheriff’s will be closed to the public due to construction on August 9, 2023.

On June 28, 2023, Lyon County Sheriff's Office Deputies responded to 4 Farrell Lane in Yerington, Nevada for a welfare check request on 56 year old Sir Charles Lester. Friends and family reported that they had not had contact with Sir Charles in almost a week, which was very unlike Sir Charles.

The Comstock Foundation Lecture series presents one of History Expeditions American West Tales.

"History Got It Wrong: Reclaiming the Grosh Brother's Legacy."

It was a record-setting beginning for the school year in Carson City yesterday where a total of 71 new educators reported to the tech center at Carson High for new teacher orientation for the Carson City School District.

The number was more than twice the regular attendance of previous years. The teachers received welcome packets, badges, laptops and other necessary materials and will receive training over the next several days leading up to the first day of school Monday, August 14.

According to the California Nevada River Forecast Center, the Walker River in Yerington and Mason Valley has maintained at or below action stage for over two weeks. Based on the decreasing river forecasts, Lyon County is shifting focus toward recovery and clean up from the recent flood events.

A 61-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 3500 block of Highway 50 E. following a fight between himself and his brother that resulted in several felony charges.

The Nevada Humane Society will be on scene at Carson City Toyota Saturday, Aug. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a gaggle of puppies in tow.

“Carson City Toyota has been a long time supporter of Nevada Humane Society, and what better way to say thank you than puppies?” Katie Cole, Events Coordinator for NHS said.

The Carson City Stake Relief Society of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be hosting their annual community clothing exchange on Friday and Saturday, August 18-19, 2023, at the church building located at 411 N. Saliman Road, just south of Carson High School.

A 24-year-old Mound House man was arrested in the area of N. Carson St. and E. William St. for felony drug possession and misdemeanor possession of paraphernalia.

According to the arrest report, Noel Colon-Cabral was arrested after deputies were patrolling the area of E. William and N. Roop St. Monday night and noted a vehicle driving with no license plates.

At first glance, Lake Tahoe is pristine. But look closer. Aquatic invasive plants and trash threaten the unique water quality and clarity for which Tahoe is known.

UPDATE 2:40 p.m.: Sheriff Ken Furlong said the scene is cleared and there is no danger.

Just before 1:45 p.m., the DMV offices in Carson City were evacuated due to a suspicious unattended backpack.

A bomb sniffing dog is enroute from Reno.
