Lightning strikes cause power outages, communication tower problems in Lyon County
Lyon County crews are addressing heavy rainfall and lightning issues that developed Wednesday during a series of storms. Lyon 911 dispatch reports the loss of communications sire on Rawe Peak, said County Manager Jeff Page.
The county's Department of Information Technology is responding at this time. It is believed that the communications site was struck by lightning. Lyon County road crews are monitoring drainage canals and the storm to keep the drainage canals free from debris and water flowing, said Page.
There are reports of power outages throughout Lyon County. NV Energy reports 49 customers without power south of Yerington on State Route 208 between Osborne Drive and East Tognoli Lane. The storm is producing heavy rainfall throughout Lyon County as well as significant lightning. All roads are currently open and there are no reported injuries or deaths.
The National Weather Service advises strong thunderstorms are moving into southern Lyon County, south central Churchill and north central Mineral counties.
At 2:10 p.m. a strong thunderstorm was located 19 miles west of Gabbs, moving north at 25 mph. Winds in excess of 40 mph and half inch hail are possible with this storm.
Locations impacted include: Middlegate, Junction U.S 50 And Nv 121 (Dixie Valley Rd), Junction U.S 50 And NV 839, Sand Mountain Campground, Rawhide, Frenchman, Fairview Peak and Sand Mountain.
Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm, according to the weather service.
