I-580 Washoe Valley lane closures begin Friday night for NDOT repaving project
Weekend lane closures will take place beginning Friday, May 13 on Interstate 580 through Washoe Valley as the Nevada Department of Transportation continues a project to repave the aging roadway surface.
Northbound I-580 will be reduced to a single lane from 7 p.m. Friday, May 13 to 5 a.m. Monday, May 16 between the exit 50 Bowers Mansion interchange and the I-580/North Carson Street interchange for paving.
Additional marathon paving sessions are scheduled to continue through early June during weekend hours to avoid impacting weekday commute travel.
Last fall, crews repaved approximately seven miles of southbound interstate and are now making their scheduled return to repave sections of northbound interstate. The interstate was last fully repaved in 2004, and is in need of resurfacing to keep the roadway smooth and safe.
In addition, drivers will continue to see intermittent lane and ramp closures on I-580 and Alternate U.S. 395 in Washoe Valley as other related road improvements are made.
An extended auxiliary lane from Alternative U.S. 395/Eastlake Boulevard to southbound I-580 is also being constructed in the Lakeview area, providing additional space and safety to merge. In addition, crews are completing seismic retrofitting of the I-580 Bellevue Road bridge as part of NDOT’s continuing effort to retrofit older bridges for enhanced safety and stability during potential earthquakes.
The approximately $15 million project by Q & D Construction is scheduled to complete in full by fall 2016. As many as 32,000 vehicles travel the road daily.
