Nevada State Museum program offers insight into John C. Fremont, topo mapping
Families are invited to a special Nevada State Museum program, “Exploring Topographical Maps,” from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17 in Carson City. The activity continues the museum’s Family Fun Saturdays series, this time with a focus on helping children discover the beauty and intrigue of maps.
The program complements the museum’s sesquicentennial exhibit, “Finding Fremont: Pathfinder of the West,” on display through spring 2015.
In groups of eight, visitors will also have the opportunity to join in a 30-minute activity best suited for children ages 10 and up. Using a map of Carson City’s “C Hill,” participants will learn to read a map using contour lines and determine elevation, water flow and the best hiking route. Guests can also make a model of a mountain to take home.
Guides will provide tours of “Finding Fremont: Pathfinder of the West” and visitors can investigate Fremont’s route through Oregon and Nevada using a compass. Fremont was an army officer with the Corps of Topographical Engineers whose mission was to describe in detail the land, the mountains, and the best routes in the West.
The museum is at 600 N. Carson St., the event is free for museum members and children 17 and under. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Adult tickets are $8 and available at the admissions desk beginning at 9 a.m. For more information, call 687-4810 ext. 237 or email dstevenson@nevadaculture.org.
