Bomb threat forces evacuation at Empire school, sheriff's office determined call to be fake
A bomb threat was made to a teacher at Empire Elementary School on Monday afternoon. Classes had already been let out when the call was made from a nefarious telephone number, Carson City School District officials said. The incident was investigated and cleared by the Carson City Sheriff's Office. School will resume Tuesday.
"With the help of the Sheriff's Office, our Safety Officer, and our IT Department, we feel there is no apparent threat to Empire Elementary," said Carson City School District spokesman Dan Davis.
In an email sent to parents, Superintendent Richard Stokes notes the following:
"This afternoon we received an unusual phone call that warranted investigation. To assure the safety of anyone left in the building, students and staff in our afterschool program were sent to Terrace Park.
"Following an examination of the phone records, it was determined that the number used to call the school is associated with harassing and illegal activity. With the assistance of the sheriff’s department, the building has been cleared of any threat.
The building will remain closed for the rest of the night, but school will resume as usual on Tuesday, May 9, 2017."
