Two jailed in fight at Carson City park, deputy kicked several times

Two men were arrested Wednesday with one facing a felony battery with a deadly weapon charge and the other for kicking a police officer during a fight in Ross Gold Park, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Brandon Smock, 33, of South Lake Tahoe is being held on $30,000 bail following the incident in which he allegedly hit the other suspect in the head with a bottle. A 33-year-old Gardnerville man, Orion Jonathan Haines, was also arrested on suspicion of gross misdemeanor battery on a police officer, two misdemeanor counts of battery and a contempt of court warrant. His bail is set at $5,674.

According to the arrest report, officers were dispatched to the 2800 block of East Appion Way at around 9 p.m. in reference to two men fighting in the park. Officers arrived and found three male subjects holding another man to the ground. The male they were holding down, Haines, was kicking, screaming and trying to get away, the arrest report states.

Two deputies assisted in detaining Haines. An officer then noticed suspect Smock about 100 yards away. According to a witness, Smock was the other person involved in the fight. An officer told Smock to walk over to him. Smock took off his shirt like he wanted to fight and started walking toward officer. An officer handcuffed Smock who was extremely intoxicated and had cuts and bruises throughout his body. He was checked by Carson City fire and rescue and photos were taken of his injuries.

Officers interviewed Smock who was not answering questions. He told officers a transvestite had beaten him up. Officers were unable to located any such persons in the investigation. Smock was placed into a patrol unit until officers could figure out what role he had in the fight, according to the arrest report.

A officer spoke with Haines who kicked an arresting officer several times in the legs and crotch area, the arrest report states. The deputy deployed his taser on the man in an attempt to get him to stop. The officer said the taser didn’t have any effect on Haines and it took 7 first responders to hold him down so that the fire department could sedate him, the arrest report states. He was taken to the hospital for injuries to his head and face. A records check of Haines showed he had a confirmed warrant issued out of Sparks Municipal Court for contempt.

Officers met with the reporting witness who explained the incident. A witness advised he was in the park and noticed Smock and Haines fighting. He called 911 but while talking to dispatch he was attacked by the Gardnerville man, Haines. The reporting witness said Haines jumped on top of him and bit him on his left pectoral muscle. Officers observed a large bloody bite mark on the witness and took pictures of the injury, the arrest report states.

The injured witness told officers that two of his friends also observed the incident, who confirmed what the reporting witness told officers. A third witness said he was playing soccer with his friends in the park and noticed the two men fighting, with Smock hitting Haines over the head with a bottle, the arrest report states. The witness stated he observed deputies detain Haines and that he saw a deputy getting kicked several times.

Smock was taken to jail on suspicion of battery with a deadly weapon, a felony. Once Haines was cleared from the hospital for his injuries he was taken to jail and charged with gross misdemeanor battery on a police officer, two misdemeanor counts of battery and the Sparks arrest warrant.
