City prepares to break ground on Downtown Curry Streetscape Project
Groundbreaking for the next phase of Carson City’s downtown corridor revitalization is scheduled for 8 a.m. Monday, April 30 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Telegraph Square, where North Curry and West Telegraph streets intersect.
This phase of downtown revitalization, known as the Downtown Curry Streetscape Project, focuses on the downtown section of North Curry Street between Musser and Robinson streets.
Plans include infrastructure improvements such as the replacement of 60-70 year-old water, sewer and storm drain systems in those areas, as well as pavement rehabilitation, widened sidewalks, installation of energy efficient LED street lights, and underground placement of overhead power lines.
The streetscape project will also feature aesthetic improvements to landscaping, street furnishings and other urban streetscape amenities along five east-west streets in that corridor — Robinson, Spear, Telegraph, Proctor and Musser — as well as the alley between Spear and Telegraph.
This phase builds upon the downtown Carson Street improvements completed in 2016 that changed the look of North Carson Street between William and Fifth, which added bicycle lanes, parallel street parking and a walking plaza on Third Street between North Carson and Curry. Sidewalks were also widened and crosswalks shortened along the downtown Carson Street corridor.
“The improvements will expand upon the success of the downtown Carson Street improvements, completed in 2016, further creating a redefined urban complete streets corridor,” said City Engineer Dan Stuckey of the Carson City Public Works Department. “In addition to the streetscape improvements, this project is also a major utility improvement project, as roughly one-third of the project cost will be used to replace aging infrastructure in the downtown core.”
Q&D Construction has been contracted to perform the work, Stuckey said, and is expected to begin heavy construction by mid-May.
Completion of the Downtown Curry Streetscape project is expected for October, he said, at a cost of $3.99 million paid for through six different municipal funds.
Money will come from the city’s designated sewer, water and stormwater funds, respectively, as well as from the Infrastructure Tax Fund, Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) Fund and the Redevelopment Fund, Stuckey said.
Project updates can be followed on the #CarsonProud web site and on social media, Stuckey said, featuring information on business access, parking, road closures, detours and construction zones.
