Carson City area weather: Forecasters say potential growing for winter storm by weekend
A series of late season Pacific storms are becoming more likely this weekend into early next week, according to the National Weather Service in a special weather statement.
Though it is still early in the week, weather models have been trending wetter and windier. NWS forecasters advise that those making travel travel plans, especially over the mountains, should keep an eye on the forecast. Forecasters also advise to make sure your vehicle remains winter weather-ready.
Widespread strong gusty winds are forecast Saturday into Sunday, according to the weather statement. These winds would bring road and aviation travel impacts across the Sierra and Western Nevada, along with localized fire weather concerns in lower elevation dry vegetation.
There is potential for significant, but not drought busting, moisture with these storms, according to the weather statement. Sierra passes could experience periods of heavy, wet snows Saturday night into Sunday and Monday with possible travel impacts and chain controls especially at night. Mountain communities such as Tahoe, Truckee, and Bridgeport look to vary between rain and snow, with Western Nevada cities seeing on and off rain showers Sunday into Monday.
Otherwise, for most of this week the weather will be mainly quiet and seasonable. Some scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible, however, Tuesday into Wednesday. Most areas will remain dry, however those that do see showers could pick up a quick 0.1 to 0.2 inches of rain. If you're outdoors in the afternoons, remain alert for lightning and seek shelter indoors if a storm approaches.
