Firefighters and overtime
There was an interesting discussion earlier this morning about overtime worked by Carson City firefighters. Fire Chief Stacey Giomi said firefighters are currently scheduled to work 56 hours a week, and talked about one firefighter who worked 4,100 hours last year, which is equal to two full-time jobs.
That adds up to a lot of overtime. One would think that hiring more firefighters to reduce the overtime would save money. But according to Giomi, for the short term, hiring new firefighters would actually cost more because of the cost of benefits. But, Giomi expressed concerns about having his personnel working too many hours over the long term.
