Carson City MAC wins Park Excellence Project of the Year Award
Carson City has been selected by the Nevada Recreation and Parks Society to receive the Elmer H. Anderson Park Excellence Project of the Year for the Carson City MAC project. This award recognizes excellence in park planning, design, construction, and environmental best practices throughout the State of Nevada.
At the annual Nevada Recreation and Parks Society conference held in April 2016 in Las Vegas, NV, City staff accepted the award on behalf of the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department, the City, the contractor, and the architect. VCBO Architecture designed the 41,000 square foot facility while Miles Construction was awarded the contract to complete the project located at 1860 Russell Way in Carson City. Construction began in early February 2015 and was completed in December of the same year.
The facility has two NCAA basketball courts overlaid by four high school courts, four volleyball courts and two futsal courts. Other features include men’s and women’s dry locker rooms and a 1/8th mile running/walking track suspended above the courts.
The new Multi-purpose Athletic Center was identified in the Carson City Parks and Recreation Master Plan utilizing the Quality of Life Initiative funding that was passed in 1996. In 2014, Carson City approved the Infrastructure Tax which allowed for the project to be completed. In total, the MAC had a project budget of $8.5 million with approximately $6 million coming from the Quality of Life Initiative and the remaining coming from the recently passed Infrastructure Tax.
The MAC is an exciting new feature in Carson City. Its primary purpose is to allow for adequate space for our current programs, allow for growth in programming, and provide recreational and social opportunities for all demographics and ages.
