Carson City arrests: Three jailed on drug and other charges

Three Carson City residents were arrested Friday at their residence in the 2300 block of Columbia Way on several charges including: suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failing to register.

Cassandra Broyles, 36, Thomas Lehman Cornwell, 66, and a 70-year-old man were arrested by Carson City Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team deputies after they went to the residence to speak with Cornwell about recent drug activity, according to the arrest report.

The residence was identified as a common location of drug use, sales, and wanted persons hiding from the police, in addition to other criminal behavior. Cornwell is on supervision with the department of alternative sentencing, and deputies were advised that a person had overdosed on heroin at that location during the past week.

Deputies spoke with Cornwell in the driveway of the residence, and he admitted that he has had several people coming and going from his residence, but the 70-year-old was the only person officially living there. SET deputies noted Cornwell appeared under the influence of drugs, and he had constricted pupils and slow speech.

Deputies called the department of alternative sentencing and asked for permission to search the residence. However, DAS said they would not be able to without further information. According to the report, deputies went onto the porch to tell Cornwell they were leaving, when they saw Cornwell inside standing in front of a can of beer and a marijuana pipe, which violated his probation.

DAS then approved the search of Cornwell’s room and common areas. In his room, deputies located a spoon with methamphetamine, several hypodermic devices, and a marijuana pipe on his nightstand. In addition, there were approximately 15 Gabapentin pills on his dresser, which are available through prescription only. In his fridge deputies also found alcohol.

In the shed on the south side of the residence, which appeared to be a converted bedroom, there was clothing and identification for Cassandra Broyles. Inside her duffle bag, deputies located several neatly folded and crips handkerchiefs of various colors. In the medicine cabinet, deputies located another crisp black handkerchief which contained a methamphetamine pipe and trace amounts of methamphetamine. She admitted to living in the shed and having her items stored there, but denied possession of the drugs.

The 70-year-old was arrested after deputies performed a criminal check. The man had quickly left the residence when deputies arrived; however, they discovered he had been convicted of three felonies and had failed to register at the new address.

Deputies located the 70-year-old at a nearby residence exiting a different shed. He was taken into custody on a misdemeanor charge, at which point he fired offensive racial slurs at the deputy during transport, the arrest report states.

Bail for Cassandra Broyles: $3,637. Bail for Thomas Cornwell: $6,637; $3,000 cash only. Bail for the 70-year-old: $437.

Deputies were dispatched to the residence on report of a domestic battery. Deputies arrived on scene and made contact with the man, who stated he and his girlfriend had been in a heated verbal argument but no physical altercation had occurred.

Deputies spoke with the woman, who told deputies the man had come home from the casino intoxicated. She was upset, and an argument started. She said the men then got into her face. She pushed him back to keep him away.

She said he then began to punch at her, but because he was intoxicated, he kept missing. He managed to punch her hands, and hit her on the leg. Deputies observed a swollen area just below her knee that was beginning to bruise.

The man was taken into custody on suspicion of domestic battery and was booked in the Carson City Jail without incident. Bail: $3,137.

— A 38-year-old Carson City man was arrested Friday afternoon in the 3700 block of N Carson Street for misdemeanor DUI first.

Deputies were dispatched to a convenience store on reports of a domestic dispute. Dispatch advised the dispute was between a man and a woman in an SUV parked in front of the store.

When deputies arrived, they walked up to the vehicle and the man turned the car on and put it in reverse. Deputies told the man to turn the car off and step out of the vehicle.

When the man stepped out, deputies could smell alcohol coming from his person. He admitted to having a shot of a pineapple flavored alcoholic beverage earlier in the day, the report states.

Deputies reported his eyes were red and watery with extremely constricted, and his speech was thick.

He also told deputies he was prescribed Methadone for pain. Deputies performed a Preliminary Breath Test which resulted in a .196 BAC. He was taken into custody without incident. Bail: $1,137.

Warrants arrests:
— A 27-year-old Carson City woman was arrested on a confirmed warrant out of Carson City Justice Court for two counts of felony burglary, two counts of uttering a forged instrument, and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Thalia Reed Dean was arrested when deputies recognized her walking in the area of Roop and Northridge, and knew she had a confirmed warrant. She was stopped and arrested on the warrant.

During a search of her person, they also located a small black tube with burn marks on it, known as a tooter for inhaling smoke produced by burning drugs. Bail: $21,137.

— A Carson City man was arrested at Mills Park Friday evening on a warrant for possession of drug paraphernalia out of Sparks Municipal Court. The warrant was issued after the man failed to appear on the drug paraphernalia charge.

Deputies were dispatched to Mills Park on reports of a suspicious person. The reporting party stated there was a male subject with an elderly female who was in a wheelchair. They said they did not believe the man was related to the woman, and they were concerned the woman was being taken advantage of.

When deputies made contact with the man, he stated the woman looked like she needed help because no one else was around her and she was in a wheel chair. A wants and warrants check came back with the warrant, and he was booked without incident. Bail: $750 cash only.
