Carson City Sheriff's Office warns of ongoing telephone scam, urges residents to be vigilant
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has been made aware of an ongoing telephone scam. In this scam, the original callers are claiming to be a family member who was involved in an accident.
They pretend to be injured, in legal trouble, and unable to speak appropriately. They give a phone number for the victims to call, and once the victim calls, victims are asked for money to pay for legal fees. In some of these scams, the victims give their address to the scammers and give money to people who show up at their house.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public to stay vigilant against scam telephone calls. Scammers evolve their tactics and different scenarios are frequently reported. If a suspicious call is received, people should hang up and not provide personal information. People should not agree to meet and give money to people they do not know and cannot verify their identity.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is reminding the public of the following advice related to scam telephone calls:
— DO NOT provide personal information over the phone to an unknown person.
— DO NOT provide financial information over the phone to an unknown person.
— DO NOT agree to meet anyone in person.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the reported telephone scams in which the scammers showed up at victim’s houses to collect money. If anyone has been a victim of a telephone scam and the scammer is currently at the house to collect money, they are encouraged to call 911 or Carson City Dispatch non-emergency at 775-887-2677.
