Carson City Sheriff's Office to conduct crosswalk operation Thursday
Happening now through the end of the month, the Joining Forces law enforcement team throughout Nevada is issuing citations to pedestrians and motorists who are breaking traffic safety laws.
The number of pedestrian deaths in 2017 was 100 statewide per the FARS preliminary report, an increase of 20 from 2016.
Nevada state law requires pedestrians to use sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian bridges and obey all traffic-control signs and signals. If there is no sidewalk, pedestrians must walk on the left side of the street, facing traffic. For motorists, they must yield to pedestrians and avoid passing vehicles that are stopped for pedestrians.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will be conducting an operation on Thursday, March 29, 2018 in Carson City. The Sheriff’s Office will be using a highly visible pedestrian in crosswalks throughout the city in an attempt to locate vehicles failing to yield to the pedestrian in the crosswalk.
Any vehicle failing to yield to the pedestrian will be educated on the importance of pedestrian safety. Education can come in the form of a traffic citation or a warning. The Carson City Sheriff’s Office reminds all drivers to pay attention, especially when the warmer weather arrives.
The Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety advises motorists and pedestrians to share the road, stay alert and aware of your surroundings, and abide by laws designed to protect all road users.
More information about the law and safe behaviors for both pedestrians and drivers is available here at the Zero Fatalities website.
