Carson City area weather: Valley and Sierra snow possible for Monday morning commute
With the first day of spring less than a week away, winter weather will return over the next couple days, with snow possible for western Nevada valleys, the Carson City area and Sierra as well as cold temperatures.
A winter weather advisory is in effect from 11 p.m. Sunday night to 11 a.m. Monday morning for the greater Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley areas, with total snow accumulations less than 2 inches possible, while some areas may receive little to no accumulation.
Forecasters advise snow Monday morning will likely occur sometime between 4 and 6 a.m. Additional snow accumulations are possible Monday evening.
There's also a winter weather advisory for the Lake Tahoe area, with 2 to 4 inches possible at Lake Tahoe level with 4 to 8 inches above 7000 feet. Up to a foot of snow is possible near the Sierra crest. Southwest winds could gust around 30 to 40 mph for Sierra valley communities with gusts up to 90 mph along the Sierra crest.
The weather services says to plan on slippery road conditions during the Monday morning commute. Gusty winds may lead to some travel restrictions along Highway 395 and I-580.
The weather service also advises that it will be cold Monday into Tuesday morning, with highs near 30 in the Sierra to near 40 in western Nevada. Wind chills will be in the teens and 20s.
Morning low temperatures Tuesday are expected to be 5 to 15 degrees in the Sierra and 15 to 25 degrees in western Nevada.
The weather service advises that you may want to bring in the pets. And, if you had decided to give your lawn a soak over the weekend, you'll want to unhook hoses and drain your sprinkler system.
