Carson City man in custody on burglary charges related to church break-in

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office executed two search warrants Thursday and have arrested a Carson City man on felony charges related to the February burglary of local church, a Carson City sheriff’s lieutenant said.
Arrested was Dwayne Kirk Snyder, 36. He faces felony charges of commercial burglary and possession of stolen property in the Feb. 3, 2015 break-in of Capital Baptist Church located at 455 South Edmonds Drive.
Computers and other items were recovered after search warrants were served Thursday in the 200 block of Gold Leaf Lane and the 3400 block of South Carson Street, said Lt. Brian Humphrey.
Officers began investigating the burglary that overnight Feb. 3, in which several items, including desktop and and laptop computers were stolen. A criminalist processed finger prints from the crime scene and there was video surveillance, where officers were able to get a description of the suspect, including the clothing he was wearing, said Humphrey.
When officers served the warrant, Snyder had been using one of the stolen computers from the church, said Humphrey.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has been working at a rapid pace this year with residential and commercial burglaries. The largest of the cases, was a ring that was broken last month, where the suspects, dubbed the “pillowcase bandits” are believed to have broken into more than 30 homes in Carson City, Douglas and Washoe counties. The suspects are awaiting court appearances regarding felony crimes of burglary and possession of stolen property.
Last week in a separate case of residential burglaries and unrelated to the crime ring broken in February, Carson City investigators arrested Rory William Torvik, 25, who faces felony charges of burglary and possession of stolen property involving at least two Carson City homes where jewelry was taken. A large of amount of jewelry, believed to be stolen, was recovered from a safe Torvik kept as well as backpacks.
There are a number of break-in and attempted burglary and robbery cases detectives are currently investigating, said Humphrey, with evidence still being collected.
Meanwhile, the sheriff’s office advises the following ways to keep homes and business protected:
• Make sure all doors and windows are locked to include those on your vehicles, nearly half of all burglaries are done with no force, which means they were able to get in through unlocked doors and windows.
• Have a trusted neighbor or family pick up newspapers or packages if you are going to be gone for any length of time.
• Tell a trusted neighbor or family of your travel plans so they can keep an extra eye on the home and so they can call the Sheriff’s Office for any suspicious activity.
• Make your home look occupied, leave lights/radios/televisions on or think about putting them on timers so they are coming on and going off during different times of the day or night.
• Close and lock your garage.
• Have the Post Office hold your mail if going away on vacation.
• Never leave notes on the door saying you are away.
• Keep valuables and packages out of sight as much as possible.
• Do not store gifts, packages, and items in your vehicle or outside allowing thieves to steal them.
• After the holidays, break down any boxes before putting them out for the trash such as TV’s, cell phones, computers, and electronic games of rather than advertising them to criminals of what new items you just purchased and are available to steal in your home.
• Document serial numbers and etch or mark items in such a way in order to later identify them when recovered if theft occurs. Criminals do not want marked items because it is harder to fence and evidence of guilt if they are caught with it.
• Exterior doors should have “dead bolt” locks.
• Sliding doors and windows should have auxiliary locks to bolster security.
• Consider alarms systems.
