Ten file for Carson City nonpartisan offices ahead of deadline
The 2018 mid-term election season is taking shape in Carson City as several local candidates have filed for election or re-election to non-partisan posts this week at the Carson City Clerk-Recorder’s Office.
Filing for local offices opened Monday, March 5 and closes Friday, March 16.
Ten candidates filed for elected office this week, including Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong, who filed March 5 for his fifth term in office. Furlong has served as Carson City Sheriff since 2003.
Furlong faces one opponent so far in the sheriff’s race. Lorne Houle filed March 5 to run against Furlong for the office of sheriff.
Carson City Supervisor Lori Bagwell, who represents Ward 3, also filed for re-election March 5. She is completing her first full term on the Board of Supervisors this year and is seeking a second term.
Bagwell is currently running unopposed for her Ward 3 seat.
Current Carson City Treasurer Gayle Robertson filed March 5 for re-election to a full four-year term. In 2018, Robertson completes an initial two-year term, to which she was elected in 2016 following her appointment in April 2015 by the Carson City Board of Supervisors.
Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury is completing his first four-year term in office this year. He, too, filed for re-election to the post on March 6.
The re-election bids of Robertson and Woodbury are currently uncontested at this time.
But the Ward 1 seat on the Carson City Board of Supervisors became contested Wednesday when Carson City resident John Wood filed for the position that will be vacated by incumbent Karen Abowd, who decided last fall not to seek re-election in 2018.
Wood currently faces opponent Stacey Giomi for the Ward 1 seat. Giomi, a retired Carson City Fire Chief, filed his bid for the office on March 5.
Carson City Assessor David Dawley filed for re-election Monday in a bid for another four-year term, while Carson City Chief Deputy Clerk Aubrey Rowlatt has filed to run for Carson City Clerk-Recorder seat being vacated by incumbent Sue Merriwether at the end of 2018. Merriwether decided not to seek re-election.
Neither Dawley nor Rowlatt are opposed in their election bids at this time.
Donald Carine, current Trustee from District 6 on the Carson City School District Board of Trustees, is currently unopposed in his bid for re-election to another four-year term. Carine filed March 7 to run again for his post.
Candidates for local and statewide offices have until 5 p.m. Friday, March 16 to file. Local candidates should file at the Carson City Clerk-Recorder's Office, located on the first floor of the Carson City Courthouse, 885 East Musser Street in Carson City.
