Senators baseball recap: Offensive surges lead Carson past Fallon 7-4
Baseball season has arrived to Ron McNutt Field in Carson City, as the Senators tallied a total of 9 hits in a 7-4 victory over the Fallon Greenwave.
After starting pitcher Ben Nelson fanned two Fallon batters in the 1st, third baseman Abel Carter started the season off with a pop. Blasting a lead-off triple to the gap in left-center leading to an RBI double from first baseman Kahle Good.
Catcher Teigan Key added to the rally with an RBI single of his own, capping-off a two-hit, 2-0 lead for Carson.
A solo shot to deep right-field from first baseman Shaw Lee trimmed Fallon’s deficit to just one run. But the Carson offense answered back in the bottom half of the 3rd inning.
The Senators would proceed to tack on another two runs off the bat from right fielder Colby Zemp, making the score 4-1 heading into the 4th.
Runs started to pile up for Carson in a hurry, as shortstop Jared Barnard launched a two-run bomb to right-center. Giving the Senators a commanding 6-1 advantage.
“I just felt good with the bat in my hands today,” said Barnard on his approach at the plate. “It just came off of the barrell and actually had enough distance to go all the way.”
After a solid outing on the mound, “4 IP, 3H, 4BB, 1ER, 4K) Nelson was relieved of his duties by Max Fontaine.
The Greenwave would add on 3 more runs off the bat of catcher Edgar Alvarado, who homered in two consecutive plate appearances. But Carson held onto their lead late and closed out Fallon for their first win of the season.
Head coach Brian Manoukian described the offensive attack at the plate from Carson.
“Offensively I thought we did a good job with our approach,” he said. “We took advantage of our opportunities when we had them and the new guys came in and did great putting runs on the board.”
Manoukian also described the adjustments needed in order to sustain early season success.
“We need to throw more strikes,” he said. “Our pitchers had a high pitch count for a low number of outs. So we need to do a better job getting to hitters early.”
For Fallon, key performers included: Alvarado (2-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI), Lee (1-4 HR, 1 RBI), and Sean McCormick (2-4, 2 1B).
For Carson, key performers included: Barnard (2-4, HR, 2B, 3 RBI), Zemp (1-3, 2B, 2 RBI), and Key (2-3, 2 1B, 1 RBI).
The Senators will look to carry momentum into a long series of back-to-back games Friday and Saturday.
