Carson City arrests: Man with warrants jailed for giving officer false ID
A 26-year-old man was arrested early Wednesday morning for allegedly providing false identification to avoid prosecution and two misdemeanor contempt of court warrants, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Arrested in the 3600 block of Goni Road was Cody James Abernathy of Gardnerville.
According to the booking report, a sheriff’s deputy was conducting a business check at a casino and made contact with a person inside seated at a gaming machine and actively gambling. The male appeared to look under the age of 21 to the deputy, who then asked him for identification.
The man said he left his identification in his vehicle. He provided a name with a date of birth of January 1992. Dispatch informed the officer they could not locate the name in the DMV database.
The officer suspected the man wasn’t telling the truth and further questioned him. The man was asked if he had a warrant. He denied having a warrant or a reason to lie. The officer observed a pocket knife and requested the man remove the knife before a pat down search for additional weapons, the report states.
During the pat search the officer located a wallet in his rear pocket and asked him if there was identification inside. The man denied having identification, the report states.
The officer continued to ask the man what his name was. The suspect then removed his wallet and handed the officer an ID card with his real name on it. He stated he had warrants and did not want to go to jail and stated the man’s name he had given the deputy was a friend of his and that he attempted to provide his information to the officer.
Dispatch informed the deputy the man had two confirmed warrants out of Carson City Justice Court for failure to appear. Both were misdemeanors and both warrants listed a no bail hold. Both warrants were signed Oct. 25, 2018. He was arrested for providing false ID to avoid prosecution, a felony. Bail: $10,000 for the charge and a “no bail” hold for the warrants.
