Downtown Coin and Carpa Nevada, LLC present $803 check to Pets of The Homeless
Carpa Nevada, LLC and Downtown Coin in their third year of partnership have presented a check for $803 to Pets of The Homeless, a non-profit focused on feeding and providing emergency veterinary care to pets of the homeless.
Carpa Nevada, LLC is a local distributer of olive oil, balsamic vinegar and tea. Owner, Jose Paz along with his wife Carol stock a shelf at Downtown Coin with merchandise to be sold at a discount with proceeds donated to Pets of The Homeless.
“Every penny helps,” said Genevieve Frederick, founder of Pets of The Homeless. “Our mission is to provide veterinary care and pet food to pets that belong to homeless people, no matter where they are in the United States.”
“We even work in Canada as well,” she said. Pets of The Homeless coordinates over 460 collection sites across the United States and has collected over 534 tons of pet food totaling to a fair market value of over 2.2 million dollars. Pets of The Homeless has spent over $657,000 in veterinary care, as well.
“Between our emergency care and our wellness clinics that we sponsor, we have treated over 17,000 pets in almost 10 years,” said Frederick. “Our anniversary is coming up in July.”
Carol Paz said, “That companion for that homeless person is a bridge to others.” Frederick explained that most people tend to view the homeless population as invisible. “When they have a pet with them, it’s an opening for them to have a conversation and then that homeless person feels less isolation,” she said. “That pet gives that homeless person a reason to live. Now, they have that responsibility not only for their being, but for another being. That human/animal bond is strong especially for someone who is with that animal 24/7.”
The community can purchase the items donated by Carpa Nevada, LLC that benefit Pets of The Homeless by visiting Downtown Coin at 111 W. Telegraph St., Tue. through Sat. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Pet food donation sites are scattered throughout Carson City, and a list of locations is available at PetsofTheHomeless.org.
