Dayton Community Invited to Partner with Food Pantry for $1M Feinstein Challenge
During March and April, groups and individuals are invited to partner with the Dayton Food Pantry for The Feinstein $1 Million Challenge to fight hunger.
Mary Piper, organizer for the local Challenge, explained, “If groups donate non-perishable food items or money to Dayton Food Pantry in March and April, the Feinstein Foundation will add funds. The more donations we receive, the larger our slice of the pie will be.”
The Food Pantry is excited about the chance to raise funds through the Feinstein Challenge. With the unemployment rate for Lyon County approaching 20 percent, the numbers of those in need of the food pantry is great. Freida Carbery, director of the Food Pantry, noted that over the last year, they’ve seen a spike in childhood hunger in the small community that they’d like to reverse.
Donations of food, cash, checks and pledges received from March 1 to April 30 will be counted for the Feinstein Challenge.
Feinstein is a nationally known philanthropist and humanitarian whose past 13 challenges to fight hunger resulted in over $1 billion for thousands of agencies nationwide. Last year the Dayton Pantry received nearly $1,000 for the challenge thanks to extra food drives by local businesses and schools.
Healthy Communities Coalition’s Dayton Food Pantry is open Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm at 4 Enterprise Way on Highway 50.
