Carson City green zone charter adopted
Members of a community advisory panel met Wednesday to adopt a local charter for the state of Nevada's Green Zone Initiative, a statewide effort to bring veteran service providers and other community stakeholders together in a pooling of resources that would make access easier for the state's veteran population.
The panel approved making Carson City one of 10 community green zone councils across the state, calling its local initiative the Carson City Area Veterans Community Council (CCAVCC).
The meeting, attended by veterans and veteran leaders, veteran support personnel, service providers, community leaders and the media, was held at the Carson City Sheriff's Office and led by Frank Reynolds, president of the Vietnam Veterans Association Chapter 388 in Carson City.
Reynolds read the charter's purpose and goals to the panel, reinforcing the concept that better communication needs to exist between community stakeholders and service providers if veterans are going to receive maximum benefit from the local resources available.
Mayor Bob Crowell and City Manager Nick Marano, both military veterans, attended the panel meeting. The mayor, a United States Navy veteran, said for the green zone initiative to succeed locally, everyone needs to be on the same page.
"There's a whole lot of sea of goodwill out there for veterans and it's important to have that sea moving in the same direction," Crowell said. "We need everybody in the same room."
Marano is a U.S. Marine veteran.
Also attending was Nevada Assemblyman PK O'Neill, representative of Assembly District 40 in Carson City. Sheriff Ken Furlong, who called the initial meeting together last week, was out of town on business Wednesday.
Reynolds, along with several other fellow military veterans in attendance, appealed to the community stakeholders and service providers who reach out to the local veteran population, to attend the council's next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, March 2, at 3 p.m. at the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
Community stakeholders in Carson City -- entities that play a role in a veteran's reintegration back into civilian society -- are encouraged to attend the council meetings and offer input on how to improve interagency communication and consolidate access to resources for the benefit of local veterans.
