Shake-up in the Nevada Appeal newsroom
We have heard from multiple inside sources about the abrupt departure Wednesday of Editor Peggy Santoro from the Nevada Appeal newsroom. We don't know the details, and understanding how these things work inside that company, we may not know for a while, if ever.
I worked with Santoro for about a year, starting a couple of days after Editor Barry Ginter was abruptly fired in 2008. I liked her and found her to be a good newsroom leader. We both hail from the flatlands of Kansas, though we attended rival schools (I'll give her a break this week considering the beating my Kansas State Wildcats handed her overrated #1 ranked Kansas Jayhawks Monday night).
However, Santoro may be the only editor in the long and colorful history of the Nevada Appeal to not live in or adjacent to Carson City. Her and her husband Joe Santoro are Reno residents, refugees from the Gannett-owned Reno Gazette-Journal, and fellow victims of the downturn in newspaper fortunes. She was hired despite the fact there was little chance she would move to Carson City.
Trying to be the editor of a community newspaper when you don't live in the community is not easy. I know, because I've done it. For three and a half years, I was editor of the North Lake Tahoe Bonanza in Incline Village, while living here in Carson City.
I got away with this only because I had lived in Incline Village in the past, during which time I served as the paper's editor, so I knew the job and community well. My wife Tracy also works in Incline and is very connected in that community as well. I also had a great boss, publisher Mary Jurkonis, whose community spirit and connections made my job much easier.
But eventually the commutes and six-day work weeks took a toll after our daughter was born, so I moved back down to the Nevada Appeal.
While I'm sorry to see Santoro go, perhaps the Appeal can find an editor who will actually live in Carson City, and become a part of this community.
