Carson City Weather: Wind, rain and Sierra snow return by midweek
After more than a week's worth of mild and dry conditions around Carson City and Lake Tahoe, a winter storm system will return Wednesday with snow in the Sierra and rain with the potential for snow showers in the valleys, according to the National Weather Service.
Winds will become strong and gusty Wednesday, which is likely to impact travel for high profile vehicles, followed by rain and then snow Wednesday afternoon into Thursday. Exact snow amounts are uncertain at this time due to the rapid progression of the storm and very warm air ahead of it, but liquid totals in the Sierra look to be 1 to 2 inches or around a foot or more, according to the weather service.
The important thing to note is that snow levels will crash behind the cold front Wednesday night with rapidly deteriorating conditions in the Sierra likely. The weather service advises to have a back up travel plan. Snow is possible in Western Nevada by Thursday morning, but accumulation below 5,000 feet is unlikely.
