Carson City man jailed for allegedly harboring fugitive, home equipped with surveillance cameras
A 61-year-old Carson City man was arrested Saturday for suspicion of felony harboring a fugitive and other alleged offenses, a Carson City sheriff's deputy report states.
Duane Decastro was taken into custody at 11:33 p.m. in the 1800 block of Brown Street. According to the arrest report, deputies responded to assist officers with a confirmed warrant out of Douglas County. Deputies received information the man with the Douglas County warrant was staying at a Brown Street address, the arrest report states.
Deputies arrived on scene and approached the front of the residence and knocked on the door, making multiple announcements. Deputies could hear movement inside the residence, the report states.
While making announcements, a male subject exited through the backyard. The man was detained. Deputies continued to make announcements to the residence over the intercom and verbally. Officers then applied for a search warrant, which was granted. The door was breached and multiple announcements were made.
A male subject exited the home and was escorted out by the residence by officers. Deputies entered the home. On the west side of the residence was a bedroom where Decastro was located and taken into custody.
Deputies cleared the room and observed a TV screen with video surveillance of the outside. The screen was right next to the bed where Decastro was found. There was an additional TV screen in the living room that had video surveillance of the outside. The surveillance screens showed outside the residence where deputies were at. Also located was a criminal complaint out of Douglas County for the man with the warrant.
Deputies continued the search where a sergeant gave multiple commands in another bedroom. A male subject — whose identity was not disclosed because he was not arrested by Carson City Sheriff's Office — was found hiding in the upper part of the closet.
That subject was taken into custody by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and transported to Douglas County Jail.
Decastro was arrested for obstructing a peace officer, a misdemeanor, harboring a fugitive, a felony and misdemeanor violation of bail conditions. He was read his Miranda rights and he agreed to speak. He said he was sleeping at the time deputies were making announcements at the home.
He was asked if he didn't hear officers making the announcements verbally and through an intercom. Decastro stated no. He was asked if he didn't hear when deputies breached the door, which was right next to his room. Decastro said that is when he first started to wake up, the report states.
Descastro said he is the one who is renting the home and that he did not know that the other subject, who was taken into custody by the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, had a warrant for his arrest.
Carson City deputies learned from a statement taken as part of the investigation that Decastro was aware of law enforcement's presence and that Decastro wouldn't open the door for officers, according to the arrest report. Bail: $10,412.
