Carson City commute for Jan. 24: No controls at lower elevations, schools on schedule
There are currently no controls on roads and highways at lower elevations in Northwestern Nevada, including Interstate 580, U.S. Highway 395, Old 395 Alternate through the Washoe Valley and U.S. Highway 50 East from Carson City, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT).
State Routes 341 to Virginia City, 207 up Kingsbury Grade and 208 at the Douglas County line toward the Smith Valleys in Lyon County are also open with no controls for the Tuesday morning commute.
Chains and snow are required, though, at Spooner Summit on Highway 50 from the Carson City line to 4.5 miles east and 14.5 miles west into Douglas County along the shore of Lake Tahoe, NDOT said.
SR 431 up the Mount Rose Highway also has chains snow tires required for about 12 and a half miles, from mile post 0.2 to 12.8 in Washoe County.
Carson City School District is operating on schedule Tuesday morning with no delays posted on the district web site. There are also no delays reported at schools in Washoe, Storey, or Lyon counties this morning. Douglas County schools in the Carson Valley are also operating without delay Tuesday morning.
School buses picking up students for Zephyr Cove Elementary and Whittell High School at Lake Tahoe, though, will only stop for students at the main bus stops located at Tina and Ski Court along SR 207 and at the Glennbrook entrance along Highway 50 West, the Douglas County School District web site reports.
Carson City has a 20 percent chance of 20 snows Tuesday morning before 11 a.m., according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno. But clouds are expected to dissipate, leading to partly sunny skies in the afternoon and a high temperature around the freezing mark at 31 degrees.
The area continues to dry out into Wednesday, but conditions will be sunny and cold with highs again in the low 30s.
Another front of precipitation moves into the region Thursday, bringing with it a 30 percent chance of snow before 11 a.m. But accumulation at valley levels are expected to be less than half an inch, the NWS reports.
Carson City can expect to dry out again over the weekend and into Monday of next week, the NWS said, with mostly sunny skies and high temperatures in the mid to upper 30s.
Overnight lows this week into next will also be frigid, dipping into the teens and possibly single digits.
