Carson City area weather: Rain, snow showers in valleys with heavier snow in the Sierra
Rain and possible snow showers are headed our way, with a weather system that should begin arriving overnight, according to the National Weather Service. For Carson City, forecasters are saying it will be more rain than snow in the capital city Wednesday and if there is snow, it will be less than a half inch.
The weather service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Sierra. Gusty south to southwest winds will accompany the storm, 30-50 mph in valleys and over 80 mph on Sierra ridges.
Light to moderate snow will begin between 3 and 6 a.m. Wednesday morning. Snow will continue through early afternoon before turning to snow showers that will last through Wednesday night. The Lake Tahoe Basin is looking at 2 to 4 inches of snow, with 4 to 10 inches in the higher mountains surrounding the lake. The heavier snow will be west of Highway 89 including Donner and Echo summits, according to the weather service.
Snow levels will begin between 6,500 to 7,000 feet early Wednesday morning and then will begin to lower with any rain turning to snow in the Sierra. See the forecast discussion here.
Motorists can expect delays and chain controls for mountain passes including Highway 50 over Spooner Summit, State Route 207 over Kingsbury Grade, Donner and Echo summits, Carson Pass and over Mount Rose Summit.
