Carson City weather: Storm systems likely won't produce much heavy precipitation
When is the next storm? It looks like a weak storm will brush to the north of the area Tuesday with little to no precipitation for the Sierra and western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.
The next decent chance for rain and snow will be Wednesday, but just how much will be uncertain. The ridge has already broken up and weakened a couple of systems encountering the west coast, so forecasters are uncertain if this storm will hold together.
The heaviest snows in the Sierra on Wednesday are likely from Highway 50 northward, with less of an impact to Mono County than storms the previous week. Gusty south to southwest winds will accompany the storm - 25-35 mph in valleys and over 80 mph on Sierra ridges.
Models are trending for precipitation into Thursday on the back end of Wednesday’s system with some modest snowfall amounts in the Sierra and travel impacts over the Sierra passes.
Another potentially stronger system will move into northern California and Western Nevada by Saturday night. While forecaster confidence is low overall, there is a chance the storm will impact travel in the Sierra over the weekend. Snow levels could be around 4,500 to 5,500 feet for both of these systems — Thursday and Saturday — with the main impacts in the Sierra and a mix of rain and snow for the valley floors.
