Carson City sheriff’s bookings: Suspect in 2 hit and run crashes faces multiple charges

A 37-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday on multiple charges following two hit and run crashes that caused damage to a vehicle near a daycare center and an office building on North Carson Street, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

The driver faces misdemeanor charges of two counts hit and run causing property damage, driving without a valid driver’s license and being an ex-felon failing to register. According to the arrest report, deputies were called to the area of North Carson and Adams streets after a newer model Jeep crashed into the building that houses Sign Pro.

The arriving deputy was told that a man standing at the sidewalk was inside the Jeep. The deputy made contact and asked him about it. The man said he was a passenger and that he did not know the driver and said the suspect was giving him a ride, the arrest report states. The passenger was not injured.

The passenger told deputies the driver took off running after the accident and gave officers a description. The deputy went into the Jeep to recover any evidence and was unable to find any. The insurance card showed the insurer of the vehicle. At around that time, a cab driver spoke with a deputy and said he witnessed the Jeep hit a parked vehicle on Park Street near a daycare center and then saw the Jeep crash into the building. The witness filled out a statement.

The passenger was again interviewed and told a deputy he was looking for a ride and the man in the Jeep picked him up and that the driver of the Jeep crashed into a parked vehicle on the Park Street. The passenger explained the driver then drove off after hitting the car and went onto Carson Street. He said the driver was swerving and driving fast, losing control of the Jeep and hitting the building.

The insurance card holder was contacted. The woman, who lives at a nearby motel, told dispatch that her Jeep was stolen. A deputy responded to the motel and met with the woman’s boyfriend who said he was there on her behalf, at the motel at 1930 North Carson Street, approximately 1,200 feet from where the accident occurred.

That boyfriend turned out to be the suspect driver who denied being involved but who later was positively identified by the passenger in the Jeep as the man who hit the vehicle on Park Street and the Sign Pro building. He was arrested on misdemeanor charges. Bail: $1,708.

According to the arrest report, deputies responded to a casino for a report of a man jumping out of a moving taxi to avoid paying the bill. Deputies met with the cab driver who said he drove the man to several locations.

When he learned the man didn’t have any money to pay for the taxi he attempted to drive the man to the sheriff’s office and that’s when the suspect jumped out of the moving taxi.

The man was located at the casino and arrested. During the search officers found two small baggies containing methamphetamine and two prescription pills, Clonazepam, one in his property and the other in his jacket pocket. Bail: $5,439.

— A 74-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday, 12:34 a.m. in the 3300 block of Dale Drive for misdemeanor DUI, hit and run and failure to maintain a lane of traffic. According to the arrest report, deputies were advised by two witnesses they saw the man fail to maintain a lane of travel, striking a fence. The witnesses followed the man to Dale Drive where the vehicle parked.

A deputy went to the address and met with the driver who showed signs of intoxication. He admitted to drinking five to six beers. He said he was not injured in the accident but admitted to losing control of his vehicle. He said he did not know if he hit anything when he lost control of the vehicle.

He agreed to field sobriety tests and provided a preliminary breath tests of .143, according to the arrest report. Bail: $1,861.
