Carson City Sheriff’s Office continues Citizen’s Safe Zone in 2016
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will continue its Citizens Safe Zone program on Saturdays through 2016, officials announced Wednesday.
The program began last year. It is designed for Carson City citizens and residents of surrounding areas to exchange merchandise purchased from one another either through Craigslist, classified ads or private party sales.
The concept is to make sure the exchanges are done in a safe environment and completed in a manner safe for all parties involved.
Appointments are not necessary to access this service. Whether buying or selling items, all that has to be done is to arrange the meeting location to be at the Carson City Sheriff’s Office, 911 East Musser Street between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturdays.
"All too often, we hear of people getting hurt or are fearful of allowing strangers at their homes when buying items from internet sources or newspaper advertisements. As a result, sales are frequently carried out in parking lots or away from comfortable environments," said CCSO Volunteer Coordinator Ken Smith when launching the program in 2015.
He said law enforcement frequently receive reports of scams in which perpetrators intend on ripping off buyers.
“The service is designed to prevent losses and afford a strong sense of safety. When meeting at the Sheriff’s Office, we believe that we can help support in protecting the public, identities and valuables,” Smith said.
