Retiring Supervisor to speak at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon
Ward 4 Carson City Supervisor John Barrette, who declined to run for re-election and will leave office in January, will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic tele-luncheon.
In addition to government official, his c.v. describes him as a retired journalist, a researcher, a writer and an investor. As a newsman, he most recently served as a reporter and columnist with the Nevada Appeal, including coverage of the Board of Supervisors. In former lives he reported for United Press International and The Associated Press, as well as for newspapers and broadcast news operations both in Nevada and nationwide. His wire service and newspaper experience included positions as a bureau chief and business editor.
Before joining the Nevada Appeal, John served as a financial advisor in Carson City after securing a Series 7 securities license. He also took jobs broadcasting and as a columnist for various news outlets. He is a 1970 graduate of Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois with a focus on journalism and political science. Service on Carson City's Board of Supervisor was not John's first government rodeo. Back in his Nebraska days he served as a member of the Nebraska Parole Board and as president of the Nebraska Tax Research Council.
John is married to Jean Barrette, formerly with the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development. They wed at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City. They are members there and at St. John’s of the Wilderness Episcopal Church near Glenbrook. He has said he intends to return to his day job as a writer after his time in government is complete. Years ago he and Jean formed a company called JB WebWords, LLC, which has remained in moth balls until now. He left the news business in 2016 to run for the Ward 4 seat, and hasn’t written for regular publication since.
Upon announcing his decision not to run for re-election, John told the Nevada Appeal, “My thanks to the people of Carson City for affording me this opportunity in public life.” He said it was an honor to hold office, but that he intends to return to “the best and highest office in the United States – Carson City citizen.”
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for noon on Monday, December 14th, and will be held online via Zoom teleconference due to the restricted availability of in-person venues.
