Artown Presents: Lake Tahoe's Unique and Unconventional George and Elia Whittell
A Chautauqua presentation, “Lake Tahoe’s Unique and Unconventional George Whittell”. Local authors and historians David & Gayle Woodruff, assume the characters of George Whittell and his Parisian socialite wife Elia, one of the wealthiest couples on the West Coast during the 1920s-1960s.
The Whittells kept an African lion for a pet, owned over 20 miles of Lake Tahoe waterfront, enjoyed high stakes poker games with the likes of Howard Hughes and Ty Cobb, and inadvertently helped keep a good portion of Nevada-Lake Tahoe undeveloped.
The free 55-minute Artown history performance will be at the Sierra Arts Riverside Gallery at the historic Riverside Hotel, 17 South Virginia St., Reno, Saturday July 8 at 2PM. Please call David at 760 920-8061 for more information.
