Pony Express Performs in Smith Valley
Smith Valley Branch. The Pony Express rides to Smith Valley Library and Elementary School on May 15, from 12:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The library branch is located at 20 Day Lane, Smith, Nevada. The pony Express event is a cooperative project between the Smith Valley Schools, the Smith Valley Branch Library, and the non-profit Friends of the Smith Valley Library. The event is designed to bring a live reenactment of Nevada history to students and community residents.
The Nevada Division of the Pony Express Association will demonstrate a mochila exchange. The mochila is the leather accessory that fit over the saddle and had four pouches to carry mail. The first demonstration will be performed at 12:45 PM to 1:35 PM for the Smith Valley Elementary school.
The general public can attend the event starting at 1:40 PM to 2:40 PM for a book signing, souvenirs, and refreshments. This time will also afford the public a chance to visit with Pony Express members and ask questions. From 2:45 PM to 3:45 PM there will be a Chautauqua presentation of Ronnie Campbell, the youngest rider for Pony Express. From 3:45 PM to 4:30 PM, the Pony Express will demonstrate the mochila exchange for the general public. From 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM, Hot dogs and chips will be sold for $2.50/person.
Proceeds from the Pony Express sales table will go to the non-profit, Pony Express, Nevada Division. Proceeds from the food sales will go to the non-profit, Friends of the Smith Valley Library.
