Carson Mayor to speak at Democratic luncheon
The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell. Lori began her service on the Board of Supervisors in January, 2015, representing Ward 3, and was elected mayor in 2020. She is currently running for reelection against four other candidates in the June 11 primary. The top two will go on to the November 5th general election.
Mayor Bagwell's bio credits her with budget expertise, attention to detail on contracts, having compassion for those in need, and ability to work with others for the benefit of the community. Her 26-year career path began at the age of 17, in the mail room at the Department of Taxation. She later became Budget Director, Taxation Specialist and lobbyist for the Nevada Association of Counties. She then served as Tax Administrator for the Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety, Management Analyst for Child and Family Services, Budget Analyst for the Governor’s Office, and Deputy Director of the Department of Corrections.
After retirement from state service, Lori tried her hand at being a business owner and entrepreneur. This gave her a first hand understanding the challenges faced by the small business community. Taken together, Lori's public and private sector experience give her an excellent complement of skills that still serve her well as the city's mayor.
As mayor, Lori successfully advocated for an increase to the City's Ending Fund Balance (savings account), doubling it over five years. She also pushed to create an account to facilitate long term maintenance of city assets. She worked with other Board members to establish transportation districts within the city, so that every area would have equitable access to road maintenance and repair services.
Mayor Bagwell was also a key player in the establishment of Richards Crossing, a 39-bed housing project for those with special needs, with veterans given priority for placement. She co-chaired the fundraising committee which successfully raised the funds needed to furnish all the units. She believes that those who have experienced homelessness should be provided with furnishings for their new homes.
