Sierra Lutheran High School to Offer Students Free Online Writing Workshop
Sierra Lutheran High School will host a free online writing workshop called “Paper Pointers“ on April 16 from 3:00 to 3:40 p.m. for all students, Grades 5-8, who need help writing essays and term papers during the statewide quarantine.
Sierra Lutheran English Department Lead Katie Allin and SLHS’s Director of School Development Brian Underwood will use free video conferencing, courtesy of Zoom, to illustrate a variety of helpful graphic organizers and strategies to help students with writing assignments.
“The transition from traditional to online education for students has created a void for many students to get the help they need with required writing assignments,” Underwood explained. “As a public service during this difficult time, Sierra Lutheran is eager to assist students who are having a difficult time starting, or completing, required writing assignments. Paper Pointers will focus on illustrating useful tools and strategies to equip students for success with current and future writing assignments.”
This highly interactive 40-minute workshop, which will include digital writing resources that students can take with them, will demonstrate how to readily break the writing process into manageable steps. Attendees will be given tips on such things as how to develop or respond to writing topics; form thesis and topic statements, perform scholarly research, blend unique thoughts with cited material, and how to effectively summarize a paper in conclusion.
“One of the most common struggles that student’s face is ‘writer’s block,’ or simply not knowing where to start. During this unprecedented time, it is even more important to give students strategies which will help them brainstorm and feel successful during the writing process. It is our hope that this workshop will ease any extra anxieties that students may have surrounding completing writing assignments at home.”
To maximize the instruction ratio, Paper Pointers will be limited to the first 20 students who register at the Paper Pointers link located at the bottom of the Sierra Lutheran website, www.slhs.com. Upon registration, students and parents will be sent a link and password to the videoconference.
