The Nevada State Museum, a state agency with facilities both north and south, engages diverse audiences to understand and celebrate Nevada’s natural and cultural heritage.
The museum opened on October 31, 1941, and is centered in the historic 1870 Carson Branch US Mint building. The Museum collects, curates, and displays objects and specimens from the state within three general divisions: history, natural history, and anthropology.
Dr. Hattori has been Curator of Anthropology and Paleontology at the Nevada State Museum since 1999. He specializes in the historic and prehistoric archaeology of Nevada and surrounding regions.
His areas of interest include western Great Basin basketry from 12,500 years ago to the historic period. He began his tenure at the museum as co-curator for Under One Sky: Nevada’s Native American Heritage exhibit. His current research includes a 14,000-year-old cache of locusts from a Winnemucca Lake (NV) cave and an 1889 commercial cutthroat trout fisherman’s tackle and personal possessions also from Winnemucca Lake.
Hattori earned his PhD and MA in Anthropology at Washington State University, 1982 and 1975 respectively, and a BS in Zoology from the University of Nevada, Reno, in 1971. Gene is a Registered Professional Archaeologist.
