Stephanie Arrigotti has been directing and producing shows for the Western Nevada Musical Theater Company at WAC for several years and every year she brings greater casts and more entertaining shows to the Community Center in Carson City. Friday night she opened "The Phantom of the Opera" to an enthusiastic audience with possibly the biggest first-night numbers in the theater group's history.
And the audience got what it came for — a beautifully staged and directed show with a cast of very talented actors.

If you have recently noticed that some of the traffic signals in town don't seem to be giving you enough time to get through them, help is on the way.
The city implemented a new coordinated traffic signal system two weeks ago, and have been making adjustments to it since then to work out the bugs, according to Transportation Manager Patrick Pittenger.
Pittenger said they have had many complaints from citizens during that time about problems with traffic signal timing, especially being able to cross main thoroughfares from side streets.

Erick Leroy Rogers, 46, a construction worker from Carson City, was arrested in the 1900 block of N. Carson St. around 2:30 p.m. Friday after officers responded to a call regarding a tip about several previous burglaries at laundromats in the Carson and Douglas area. Bail is set at $25,000.

I missed the first two films in the "Harold and Kumar" series, but if they were as goofy and off-the-wall funny and nonsensical as "A Very Merry Harold and Kumar 3D Christmas," I've got some catching up to do.

The Northern Nevada premiere of Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber's classic tale of forbidden love, will arrive at the Carson City Community Center during weekends in early November, according to the Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau.
The production will appear Friday, Saturday and Sunday, November 4 - 20 at 2 p.m. or 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18-22 and may be purchased by phone or in person at the Performing Arts Office of Western Nevada College, 775-445-4249. Parking is free.

On Oct. 20, the Carson City Board of Supervisors awarded a contract to Horizon Construction, Inc. for various improvements to Carson River Park, located on Carson River Road at Lloyd’s Bridge. The construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, Nov. 7, and will take approximately three months to complete, depending on the weather.

When I read last month that the Nevada Appeal planned to start charging readers to access their web content, a tune began playing in my head: "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas..."
Since the first step of their paywall (as we in the industry refer to paid access systems) was erected on Wednesday, traffic for Carson Now shot up 50 percent. I expect that to grow even more when the first free trial period ends and they begin asking readers for their credit cards.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested transient Joshua Lieberman, 30, at the corner of Fall and Long streets Wednesday afternoon, for felony possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
According to the arrest report, deputies were dispatched after a call was placed about a person possibly selling drugs. Deputies spotted the subject - later identified as Lieberman - near the FISH store, acting nervously and clenching his left fist. Being told to relax made the subject more nervous.

The video reportedly shows Sencion exiting the restaurant after shooting the victims inside, and then shows him shooting B.J. Lejon, 67, who was standing near a motorcycle in the parking lot. Fortunately, the helmet she was wearing saved her life, according to Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong.

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested Jose Manuel Olivas, 22, Tuesday night in the 1900 block of North Carson Street for felony trafficking of methamphetamine.
According to the arrest report, a deputy was patrolling on foot around the motel after reports of illegal drug activity in the area. He saw the suspect take a cell phone out of his pocket, and a plastic bag fell out on the ground. When the deputy asked the suspect if he had anything illegal on him, he said he had meth.

Matthew Russell Blevins, 41, of Carson City, was arrested Monday afternoon for allegedly hitting a road worker with his truck.
According to the arrest report, the incident took place near the intersection of East Long and Russell Way. The flagger reported that Blevins, driving a 1996 white Ford truck, disregarded his directions to drive on the east side of the street. He said that Blevins then stopped, made hand gestures at him, then drove straight at him, striking his right leg with the vehicle. The victim said Blevins then left the scene northbound on Russell Way.

Carson City firefighters responded this afternoon to a wildland fire in an empty field near the 3000 block of South Carson Street south of Mill House. Initial attack of the fire at different flanks has the fire reportedly knocked down, but fire units continue to arrive and are staging at the Mill House parking lot. Windy conditions caused the fire to spread to about an acre in size. Mop up is happening now but firefighers on the scene are reporting that, because of the wind, the burn area needs a good dousing to stop stray embers from spreading. A 62-year-old man died of an apparent heart attack Monday afternoon after he was detained for shoplifting at the Safeway store on North Carson Street.
The subject was detained by store security for alleged shoplifting and Carson City Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene. While in the store manager's office, the subject turned pale and began having difficulty breathing, at which time paramedics were called.

A 43-year-old woman was seriously injured and taken to Renown Regional Medical Center by Care Flight after being hit in a crosswalk on Monday afternoon in Gardnerville, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.
An accident investigation indicates the woman was walking in a crosswalk to an entrance to an O’Reilly vehicle parts store at 2:37 p.m. on Highway 395 north of Kingslane, said Trooper Dan Lopez.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Consumers who have suffered an “extraordinary life event” may now ask their insurance company to provide an exception to the use of their credit information for underwriting and rating purposes, which may otherwise result in an increase in their premium rate.
“This is an important chance for some Nevadans who have suffered an unfortunate event to find relief during these trying economic times,” said Commissioner Scott J. Kipper of the Nevada Division of Insurance.

Another change in the skies over Carson City, Western Nevada, Lake Tahoe and the Sierra is in the forecast this week, according to the National Weather Service.
After a Nevada Day weekend of blue skies and warm weather a cold front will move into the area late Monday giving way to cooler temperatures in the valleys and a chance of snow in the Sierra on Tuesday. Later in the week, a colder and wetter system will move through the region, with possible periods of heavy snow for Lake Tahoe and the Sierra, according to the weather service.

For the first time in more than a century, bighorn sheep are back in the Virginia Mountain Range of Northern Nevada.
On Sunday, the Nevada Department of Wildlife and volunteers from conservation groups, released eight desert bighorn sheep into Virginia Mountains south and east of Reno. The movie "The Rum Diary," currently housed at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City, Stars Johnny Depp an roving journalist. It's based on the book of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson, a '60s star of the gonzo brand of journalism. To a large extent the film is a tribute to Thompson and is so noted at the end.
Film opens with Depp as Paul Kemp recovering from a hangover in what turns out to be a hotel room in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He's unshaven, bleery-eyed and is at once nasty to the bellman who brings his breakfast to the room.
