The unstoppable evolution of health care reform
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Mon, 03/29/2010 - 7:32amThese days, I get a chuckle when I see people engaging in philosophical debates over health care reform, or "socialized medicine" as opponents call it.
I understand and respect the positions of those who think government should not be a part of the health care system, that the free market will fix everything. It's an interesting philosophical position, but it faces the brick wall of reality.
With enormous stakes, Harry Reid was unflinching in health care reform
Submitted by editor on Sun, 03/28/2010 - 4:54pmIt was about midnight and tensions at the White House ran high on that January evening. House and Senate leaders had been haggling for days to merge their two health care bills. The heady momentum of passing President Barack Obama’s top domestic priority in both chambers had given way to the touchy task of reconciling two very different pieces of legislation. Their window for passing health care was closing: Republican Scott Brown was gaining ground on the Democratic candidate for the Massachusetts Senate seat long held by Ted Kennedy. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid began to speak.

Submitted by on Sun, 03/28/2010 - 12:34amThere's always something special about winning the 4x400-meter relay at the end of a track and field meet. A year ago, the Carson High girls celebrated when they won the 4x400 at the Fallon Elks Invitational, and on Saturday, the Carson boys took their turn when the quartet of Taylor Bradshaw, David McMasters, Brandon Buonacorsi and Nick Schlager won to cap off their day at the 37th annual Fallon invite at Churchill County High's Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex.
John L. Harvey Field should be renamed Fantasyland
Submitted by on Sat, 03/27/2010 - 11:56pmThere is no more reality at John L. Harvey Field. Just rename the place Fantasyland and be done with it. Only the utterly impossible, the ridiculously implausible will ever be possible again.
Confident and relaxed Senators win twice in bottom of the seventh
Submitted by on Sat, 03/27/2010 - 11:26pmTwo words came to Colby Blueberg's mind when he spoke about the Carson High baseball team's dramatic double header sweep of Fallon on Saturday afternoon -- confidence and relaxed.
"A couple of things didn't go our way today, but we just stayed confident and relaxed," Blueberg said after contributing to game-winning seventh-inning rallies that lifted the Senators to 4-3 and 2-1 Sierra League victories at Ron McNutt Field. "We were able to keep calm and make the plays."
Lesson learned! Senators gain split of double header against Fallon
Submitted by on Sat, 03/27/2010 - 9:41pmEven after surging to a 6-0 lead in the home half of the first inning, the Carson High softball team wasn't ready to relax during the second game of its Sierra League double header against Fallon on Saturday afternoon.
The Senators never let their foot off the gas pedal, tacking on five runs in the third inning and four more runs in the fourth on their way to a 15-1 victory to salvage a split of the twin-bill. Fallon took an early lead and held on for a 4-3 win in the opener.
Wildcats show offensive life against No. 1 Bruins
Submitted by on Sat, 03/27/2010 - 9:34pmIt may not show up in the conference standings, but the Western Nevada College softball team showed some significant progress while losing both ends of a double header at Salt Lake Community College on Saturday.
The Wildcats took undefeated Salt Lake the seven-inning distance in both games before losing 7-1 and 6-1 during the Scenic West Athletic Conference twin-bill at Bruin Field in Salt Lake City. The outcome was different from Friday, when the Wildcats lost 19-7 and 19-1.

Gibbons using heath care reform suit for political purposes?
Submitted by Kirk Caraway on Sat, 03/27/2010 - 10:02amLet me preface this by saying the just-passed health care reform law provokes strong opinions on both sides, and I'm not going to attempt in this post to pass judgement one way or the other.
But it seems very clear that embattled Gov. Jim Gibbons is trying to use this issue to boost his reelection chances, to the detriment of the state.

Carson City's Urban Pond
Submitted by on Tue, 03/23/2010 - 1:52pmby Scott Schrantz Source: http://aroundcarson.com/2010/03/23/carson_citys_urban_pond The more finished this new pond at Fuji Park gets, the more disappointing it is. First, it's not in Fuji Park at all. It's behind the Carson City Fairgrounds, on the other side of the river, back where everyone can see it from the highway but you'll need signs and arrows to tell you how to get there. This could have been so much better if it was over by the grassy area of the park itself, maybe even built so that Clear Creek flows through it.
