Feeding Pets of the Homeless, a national animal welfare nonprofit based in Carson City, Nev., received a $2,000 grant from Albertsons Companies Foundation of Phoenix, Ariz. This generous contribution has enabled the organization to make a significant impact on the lives of both homeless individuals and their beloved pets in the Reno community.

A 65-year-old man was arrested Friday for suspicion of gross misdemeanor elder abuse and misdemeanor domestic battery, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

According to the arrest report, Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies learned the man allegedly slapped his wife who has a traumatic brain injury and is not very responsive speaking and with commands or comments.

Elementary schools in the Carson City School District will participate in the 2023 “Social Studies Spectacular” this week, Sept. 18-22.

The weeklong events and activities aim to engage students with social studies content and learning skills in various social studies domains including civics, history, geography, multi-cultural, economics and financial literacy.

“Peace Through Understanding.” That is the motto and the mission statement for the Rotary Youth Exchange program. RYE is a study abroad program put on by Rotary, with students admitted to the US under a J1 visa. At any given time, there are about 8000 students in the program from the US and over 100 participating countries.

Medicaid coverage has been reinstated for Nevadans who recently had their coverage end because they did not return their renewal documentation, known as a procedural denial, according to the state's Division of Welfare and Supportive Services.

Western Nevada College and area high school students participated in the ROADS Workforce Career Fair and Workshop on Wednesday on the Carson City campus. Students gained valuable skills networking with local business leaders. They practiced their interview skills, developed or improved their resumés and discovered new career opportunities.

Last year, the Director of the Nevada State Museum, Dr. Josh Bonde, his wife Becky Hall, Director of the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada, and their two daughters Nola Belle and Kiera were involved in an accident. All were seriously injured in the accident and Nola Belle lost her life.

UPDATE SEPT. 19: An update has been posted providing the suspect's side of the story, who claims that deputy's were untruthful in the report and that he was actually the one battered by the Public Works' employee, not the other way around. To read that story, click here.

UPDATE: The police report stated that the employee was removing "signs on city property on street poles" which Carson Now mistakenly inferred as being street signs. However, it has come to our attention that the signs being removed were actually property of the suspect. We will have more updates to follow.

A 42-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of E. Winnie Lane and N. Roop St. Thursday morning for burglary of a motor vehicle after allegedly attacking a Public Work’s employee for removing street signs.

Those who think teenagers are lazy have never met David Gutierrez-DeJesus. A conscientious student, enthusiastic musician and dedicated do-gooder, David is on the go from morning until night, doing his part to make life better for himself and those around him. The Carson City Host Lions Club is pleased to announce the Lions International Peace Poster Contest is now open for local entries.

The Peace Poster Contest is an international contest that encourages children, ages 11 to 13, to creatively express what peace means to them. The 2023-2024contest theme is “Dare to Dream.”

A 45-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of Woodside Drive for child neglect, a gross misdemeanor, after deputies found his 16-year-old mentally ill son sleeping in an abandoned trailer.

According to the arrest report, deputies responded to a property on Fairview Dr. just before 7:30 a.m. one report of an unwanted subject. The property owner had located a 16-year-old boy sleeping in an abandoned motorhome on the property.

The speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Jeff Sutich, Executive Director of the Northern Nevada Development Authority. NNDA is the state-designated Regional Development Authority for Nevada's Sierra Region: Carson City as well as Storey, Lyon, Douglas, and Mineral counties.

Established in 1981, the Northern Nevada Development Authority is a nonprofit corporation that helps to grow and strengthen the region’s economic ecosystem, and facilitates business-to-business resources to support existing businesses.

It is that time of year, Reno Air Race time. Each year dozens of aircraft come in from everywhere to park in Carson City and attend the air races in Reno. The front of the airport rarely has many aircraft but for this event the area becomes full. Mountain West typically has aircraft parked nearby but at air race time this parking is also full.

Over the past three years we have hosted large effort clean-ups in the Sand Canyon area to address the active ongoing dumping that occurs in the canyon area.

This area sees large amounts of trash year after year. We are partnering with Muscle Powered, the Desert Pigs (Carson and Dayton chapter) this year as part of their Trash Mob to tackle Sand Canyon once again!

Carson City students and teachers have been igniting passion and creativity during National Arts in Education Week, September 11-17, with loud bursts of color, sounds and enthusiasm during instruction time as well as during lunch and before and after school.
