UPDATE 6:26PM: The suspected accomplice in Saturday's jail escape, Austin Rivers, is in Carson City Sheriff's Office custody as of Monday evening. Jail escapee Cody J. Abernathy, 28, remains at large. Escapee Matthew R. Marizza, 27, was taken into custody in Sacramento County, Calif. Here is an update from the Carson City Sheriff's Office regarding two men who escaped from the Carson City Jail on Saturday night. One is in custody after being arrested near Sacramento. Two remain at large including one accomplice.

As the 76th Bee City in the country, Carson City wraps up a month of events and activities encouraging residents and businesses to “Bee Friendly, Protect Pollinators.” As a culmination of Pollinator Month, Bee City officials are donating four copies of a pollination landscaping book to the Carson City Library Wednesday, June 30 at 2 p.m. Mayor Bagwell and city officials will attend the book presentation joining Bee City officials.

The Nevada Press Foundation announced Monday that it has listed for sale its headquarters building at 102 N. Curry St. in downtown Carson City. NPF has owned the Rinckel Mansion since 2000, when the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation made a grant to the 501(c)(3) charitable organization to purchase and renovate the building. The organization has occupied the Mansion since then, sharing offices with the Nevada Press Association.

A 41-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Friday for suspicion of felony child abuse and neglect, according to a sheriff's office booking report.

In addition to the healthcare focused ETS, Nevada OSHA has updated its Guidance for Business Operations for all non-healthcare businesses in Nevada.

UPDATE 8:58: The following information has been released by the Carson City Sheriff’s Office:

On 06/26/2021 at approximately 1844 hours, Inmate Trustee Matthew Marizza and Inmate Trustee Cody James Abernathy, escaped from the Carson City Jail. An Escape Warrant has been issued. This is a “No Bail” warrant.

Matthew Marizza is described as a 27 year old White Male Adult, 5’11”, 170 pounds, with shaved brown hair, brown eyes. He has the following visible tattoos. “775” and “Pray for me” on the right side of his face and a rose on the left side of his face. A woman’s face is on the right and left side of his neck. His arms are full of tattoos or “sleeved”.

Matthew was last seen wearing a tan shirt, tan pants, and white shoes.

Matthew Marizza’s last known address is in Sparks, Nevada.

Cody Abernathy is described as a 28 year old White Male Adult, 6’00”, 185 pounds, with short brown hair, and brown eyes. He has the following visible tattoos: Black skull with a gas mask on his right hand; a red and black cross on his right forearm; black skull on his left hand; and a black star on his left forearm.

Cody was last seen wearing a tan shirt, tan pants, and white and red shoes.

Cody Abernathy’s last known address was in Gardnerville, Nevada.

Please contact your local Law Enforcement Agency or 911 if you have any information on the whereabouts of Matthew Marizza or Cody Abernathy. Do not attempt to apprehend or approach them.

UPDATE 8:34 p.m.: Drones have been deployed.

UPDATE 8:26 p.m.: Suspects are still at large.

UPDATE 8:10 p.m.: The Sheriffs Office will be deploying canines into the field.

UPDATE 7:48 p.m.: The two suspects were last seen in East Carson by the river. One is wearing a blue plaid shirt with a white undershirt. Please be aware and on the look out. Both inmates are still at large.

It is unknown at this time whether or not someone met the inmates with a van, or if they stole the van. The van is in police custody. The inmates were not with the van when it was located.

The inmates escaped while emptying the trash.

UPDATE 7:05 p.m.: Deputies are searching the Korean War Memorial park at the end of 5th Street.

Lane closures will take place on U.S. 50 in eastern Carson City June 28 and 29 as the Nevada Department of Transportation patches the highway surface.

UPDATE 12:56 p.m.: The man is in police custody and will be transferred to the hospital.

UPDATE 12:53 p.m.: The man is currently barricaded himself inside of his bathroom. Law enforcement is continuing to try and maintain contact to convince him to exit the residence.

UPDATE 11:39 a.m.: Gas has been deployed inside the residence while law enforcement attempt to bring the man outside.

UPDATE 11:20 a.m.: Sheriff Furlong stated there is a low level risk, and that the man does not have any firearms. However he did present a knife earlier.

Residents from a Carson City apartment complex were evacuated Saturday morning due to an ongoing threat from a resident suffering a mental health crisis.

The issue started before 8 a.m. on Saturday and residents were evacuated around 10:30 a.m. from the complex on the corner of Saliman and 5th.

The last Levitt Flatbed Concert is happening tonight, Saturday, June 26, featuring country band, Sagebrush Rebels. The concert will be from 6 to 8 p.m. in the west side of Carson City.

On June 24, 2021, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers in conjunction with Partnership Carson City conducted an alcohol compliance check.

This was conducted with the support of three 20-year-olds who were sent into local restaurants in an attempt to purchase alcohol. When asked for ID, each would present their real identification cards.

UPDATE: The Washoe County Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the man whose body was found in Lake Tahoe by the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office HASTY Team near Chimney Beach on June 25. Xavier Olivas, 69, of Yucca Valley, Calif., was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause and manner of death is pending further investigation. No foul play is suspected.

A second dog from the free roaming dog pack has been captured overnight and transported to the Nevada Humane Society Carson City Shelter at approximately 3:00a.m.

The dog is a tan female with a black mask and she is uninjured and in good condition.

Illegal parking issues on Nevada highways at Lake Tahoe continue to keep the Nevada Highway Patrol busy.

After spending a day at the beach along SR-28 or Zephyr Cove on US-50, those parking over the white solid fog line or in areas marked with "No Parking" signs could find a ticket, or their car towed away.

For years, lawmakers and autism advocates have been working to improve treatment and therapy services and their accessibility to people with autism, including trying to eliminate the long waiting lists to receive such treatment — especially because early intervention is key.

This spring, the Legislature took a major step that advocates hope will bring big changes to the situation.

A non-injury accident was reported just before 1 p.m. on Friday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 50 and College.

Traffic is not blocked at this time but motorists should seek alternate routes or use caution in the area.

David Wilcox, 51, of Reno is in custody at the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility and faces more than five dozen felony counts of capturing images of the private area of another person after an extensive investigation by detectives.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is requesting assistance with locating a runaway juvenile. On Thursday, June 24, 2021 Corey Del Rosario ran away from a home in Carson City. Corey does not have any medical problems and is not considered at risk.

A substantial grant given to the Brewery Arts Center by the state is allowing the local non-profit to undertake some much needed repairs and maintenance to the historic buildings on their campus.

In collaboration with Tribal authorities, the Nevada Humane Society is currently waiting for the transfer of one of the recently captured dogs.

The Carson City Fire Department recently presented local Starbucks employees Nicole Cisneros, Andrew Tuell, Allison Galloway, Brittany Stanley, and Alicia Allen with the Lifesaving Award for their extraordinary and cautionary diligence in performing lifesaving intervention while responders were en-route.

Just before 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, the much-beloved Carson City bell at the Nevada Commission on Tourism building, went on the fritz.

The bell itself used to physically ring, but was changed to a digital bell in the last few decades, emitting from the Paul Laxalt Building in downtown Carson City.
